Karloff is Gruesome!

Advantages: Karloff is magnificent
Disadvantages: Not enough tension and mystery

a bar called ?The Hangman?s Knot? which sets things up very efficiently and a couple of truly hilarious character names. First off we have a man with massive thick lenses in his glasses called X-Ray and, even more amusingly, there is a scientist called Dr. A. Tomic, how can you not laugh at that name? DT Meets G is an ok movie, better than the others in the series but still nowhere near as good as the Boston Blackie or Falcon ones. When you then think about Rathbone?s Holmes or Lorre?s Mr. Moto you suddenly see a total jump in quality and class. Gruesome is available pretty cheaply on Region 1 DVD but if you are interested in the Dick Tracy set that contains the second, third and fourth movies then that is available from Amazon for around £8 at this time. ...

Review of Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome (DVD)

Projectile Green Vomit And And Daddy's Axe!

Advantages: two classic horrors in one box
Disadvantages: no extras, if you care!

Nicholson's writer character. He eventually turns rabid psychopath and makes every effort to murder his family, famously with an axe. It is a 'Stone Tapes' scenario where the tragic history of the hotel , and the building itself, is the demon. Jack Nicholson does his usual flawless depiction of insanity and the way in which Kubrick builds the tension slowly but irrevocably up to a final crescendo has you hiding behind the sofa with a pillow for back-up. As I said, I initially thought the compilation was odd but in fact changed my mind on watching them back to back. They are both quality films in a genre that really cries out for quality these days. Well worth putting in your collection. This DVD does not include any extras, which is often the case with these compilations. Review of Gruesome Twosome - The Exorcist/The Shining (DVD)

Hooper's gruesome masterpiece

Advantages: Gripping from start to finish, genuinely scary
Disadvantages: Horrific, disturbing, definately not for children

plays a vital role in the film's chilling conclusion. After reaching the house, Jerry and Pam go looking for a lake, whilst the others explore the house. After 'fortuotously' stumbling upon a generator, Jerry then Pam enter the house, securing their gruesome fate when they are greeted by the most frightening of the family, leatherface. After time passes, Kirk begins to wonder what has happened to Jerry and Pam, and goes to search for them. After he also stumbles upon the house, he gets a chance to discover some of the house's horrifying secrets, before he is also confronted, and killed by leatherface. Once it begins to get dark, Sally and her invalid brother Franklin go looking for the others with little other than a flashlight and each other for protection.
