I am writing a review on the 1993 movie Groundhog Day starring the brilliant Bill Murray and Andi Mc Dowell.
It's the story of a TV weatherman/ journalist Phil Connors (Bill Murray) who - for the fifth year in a row has to cover the big event Ground Hog Day in Pennsylvania which he hates doing. However once he does his reporting he wants to get the hell out of there but due to very bad weather they must stay the night in the town. However - the next morning he wakes up to the sound of his radio alarm. He was happy to know he was getting home until he realises what day it is…
Ground Hog Day is the 2nd of February every year and when he wakes up the next say he realises that its actually February 2nd again and everything he went though the day before is happening all over again. However he is the only one that this is happening to, to anyone else this is the first time feb 2nd has came around. He doesn't understand how this is happening and tries to explain it to his producer Rita (Andi Mc Dowell) who doesn't take him serious at all.
He went though the whole day and hoped to wake up and it would be Feb. 3rd but no, again he had to go through another groundhog day, and another and another and another, He didn't know how long this would last. Every day he spend doing the ground hog he knew what was going to happen so he tried to change it - some for personal fun and some for the kindness of his heart. He also tried killing himself but he woke up the next morning as usual.
How was he going to get out of this unending day he hated so much?
What I think:
I think this is a very funny film, very good acting from Bill Murray and Andi Mc Dowell. Bill Murray makes it so funny as he can just push out the quirks and make you laugh even unintential. The script is very good, because it's so repetitive and he is trying to make the most of this Feb. 2nd every day he does some really funny stuff.
One day - chatting up a girl finding out her name, what school she went to - who was her homeroom teacher. Next day runs into her - pretends he went to school with her and had the same home room teacher and got a date.
A nice part he saves an old mans life, he helps a homeless alcoholic and takes him out for the night and gives him nice clothes and hot tea. His good deed for the day.
He knows exactly what's going to happen down to the very second - it's very funny. He robs a bank as he knows exactly what time the bank men leave the cash for a few seconds. You have to see this film, it's a great comedy. Bill Murray is a comedy genius anyway - he has starred in so many comedies - he has that facial expression which makes you laugh. Andi Mc Dowell is very serious in this film as she is the boss, but she soon lightens up when he uses his days with her to find out a lot about her which means he can pretend he can relate to her. Shes lovely - brilliant actress.
Its one of bill murrays best movies.
