A groundhog is a beaver by another name. Bill Murray wakes up in a recurring nightmare whereby he has to introduce a beaver to his local community everyday so that it can predict the coming of spring.
Okay, I admit it, I wrote beaver into the headline just to attract you here! Whilst you're here though, you might as well read about one of the gems of Bill Murray's career. Now, I'll be honest - I'm a fan of his. Ever since he charmed my pants off in Ghostbusters I've always set some time aside to watch any of his films that come my way.
Groundhog Day is a cut above much of the dross comedy Hollywood pumps out and it even manages to carry Andie MacDowell and stil turn in a well above average performance from all of the players. As usual, Murray is brilliant. He shines like a comic beacon, playing the 'making the best of the circumstances' role with his usual aplomb.
If you're after a light-hearted Christmas comedy with a great cast, and by a great director (Ivan Reitman - one quarter of the Ghostbusters who also makes a cameo appearance here) then take a look.
The story revoles around Murray who wakes up every morning in the back of nowhere. He starts to despair and treat the citizens with complete contempt, until he realises that the onl;y way out of his never ending lifespan (he can't even commit suicide because he still wakes up the next day in the same bed) is by doing good deeds.
Needless to say, it's a jolly good film and well worth diggin out next time you're in Blockbuster.
