The Story of steam produced by Tele Rail (another great Green Umbrella release) is expertly narrated by Nigel Harris the general manager of EMAP Active Railway Titles (not the same person who does the slightly warmer narration on the other Green Umbrella programmes) and also features a fine introduction by the famed wildlife and steam train artist David Shepherd. Nigel spoke of the fact that the last British Rail scheduled steam powered service ran in August of 1968. But, as he pointed out, the railway steam locomotive refused to die. Disadvantages: too expensive, stops too long in Mallaig

and arrives at Mallaig at 12.25pm. It then leaves Mallaig at 14.10pm and arrives at Fort William at 16.00pm. The train runs from 29 May to October 13th - Monday to Friday and Sundays 28th May and July 23 to 27 August. The only difference with First Class appeared to be that they give you free tea and coffee and the carriage is smaller with no table. I would not recommend paying the extra to sit in First Class. ROUTE +++++++ The route is described as one of the great railway journeys of the world. It's an 84 mile round trip which takes you past some impressive scenery. It starts near the highest mountain in Britain - Ben Nevis, then on to Britain's most westerly mainland railway station - Arisaig. Last Great Western

Advantages: It gets you there
Disadvantages: may be delays, pricey, sullen staff

*Update: Since writing this the first time I have had the displeasure to travel twice weekly with FGW and my estimations have gone down: old trains, slow trains, late trains (especially on a Sunday!) sullen and miserable staff members, overcrowding, prices have gone up etc. They also have the WORST train delays out of all the UK train companies...25% of their trains are late, what a disgrace.* About the Company: FGW is a train company that operates services from Wales, Bristol and the West of England into London. I always travel from Swindon and my most recent experience focuses on the London route. Swindon Station: Swindon Train Station has dramatically improved.
