I first saw Grease when it came out in 1978 at the tender age of 12. If I remember correctly it was certified 15 and it took a bit of make-up and some gentle persuasion to be able to get into the local "Flea pit" to be able to watch it. I loved it then and 25 years on I still love it.
The story is based around the kids of Rydell High School and two main characters Danny (played by John Travolta) and Sandy (played by Olivia Newton-John). They meet one summer and fall in love only to be parted when the summer ends as Sandy has to return to her native Australia. By chance her return is cancelled and they end up going to the same school and meeting, which starts a roller coaster of a love afair, which ends in them getting together at the end of term fair.
The best thing about this film has got to be the music. I am sure that most of us that where brought up with Grease can still remember all the songs, and the great thing about the DVD is that you get a song book so now you can get the right words to the songs that for the last 25 years you probably (if you are like myself) have been singing wrong.
There is a down side to the DVD and that is the soundtrack. It sounds as if the makers have dubbed the original soundtrack with one that has been enhanced to Dolby Digital and when a song starts playing you can really notice the change. I also found that in places the music didn't seem to match exactly what they were singing. It is a distraction when watching the film but not so much that it spoils the film entirely.
There are not many extras on this DVD. All you get is an Interview with Cast and Filmmakers and the Original Theatrical Trailer. It would have been nice if they could have included some of the out-takes.
All in all if you, like me, are a huge fan of Grease and want to keep this timeless piece of cinema history in your film collection I would recommend you get it on DVD. As the saying goes "Grease is the Word" and that is as true today as it was 25 years ago.
