Being a fan of modern era F1, I wasn't sure about Grand Prix until I saw it. This has to be the BEST racing movie EVER! This film is packed with racing from start to finish - Monte Carlo (looked a bit different then!), Spa, Brands Hatch, Monza (including racing on the old banked circuit!) - it was made in conjunction with the 1966 F1 season, and includes genuine racing footage from races that year, as well as appearances by drivers such as Graham Hill & Jochen Rindt. How tame and safe modern F1 feels after watching this! Made before the era of computer special effects, it makes it all the more astounding how fantastic Grand Prix the movie is - at several points where there is in-car footage you find yourself leaning with the car in to corners - something that I can't say I've done before watching a DVD on the small screen. The accompanying documentary makes it all the more apparent what work had to go in to create the real effects - involving cameras mounted in complex ways to real racing cars being driven by real racing drivers (commonplace today, but very difficult to do then). The strong cast of actors are also filmed genuinely driving the racing cars (having undergone several months race driving training before beginning the film). Some artistic licence was used in terms of the number of accidents portrayed as happening that year - however each accident shown was authentic in that they all happened at some point in pre-mid 60s F1. We are also treated to a rare glimpse inside the (real) Ferrari factory of the 1960s! There's so much racing in this film, and so much going on - any motorsport fan would absolutely love this - even those like me who only know modern F1 in real life.
All the glamour and greatness of the world's most thrilling motor racing event, interspersed with a glossy soap opera narrative. John Frankenheimer's three-time Oscar winner GRAND PRIX tells the incredible story of the Formula 1 world championships where nearly 30 top drivers from around the world come to compete in nine electrifying races. Frankenheimer captures the overlapping drama using wide-angle helicopter shots, car-mounted camerawork, and then-fashionable split-screen sequences. Stars James Garner as driver Pete Aron.
GRAND PRIX is John Frankenheimer's film about the nine-leg world championship of Formula 1 auto racing stars James Garner as driver Pete Aron. During the opening race in Monaco, a collision sends Pete's car flying into the Monte Carlo harbor, and British driver Scott Stoddard (Brian Bedford) into a wall. While Pete survives unhurt, Scott may lose the use of his legs, and many hold Pete responsible. Jean-Pierre Sarti (Yves Montand), whose marital boredom has led to an affair with fashion editor Louse Frederickson (Eva-Marie Saint), wins the next race at Clermont-Ferrand. Afterwards Pete accepts the sponsorship of Japanese business magnate Izo Yamura (Toshiro Mifune), and begins to romance Stoddard's jaded young wife Pat (Jessica Walter). Pete wins the Belgian leg of the contest, but Sarti goes into a depression after skidding on a wet track and killing two children in a crash. After Pete also takes the German Grand Prix, Stoddard amazingly returns for the Dutch event, and, driving on sheer grit, pulls out a victory. He proves it's no fluke by also winning in Watkins Glen, N.Y. and in Mexico, making the championship competitive once again. Essentially a soap opera interspersed with racing footage, the film's existence was ascribed by Frankenheimer to his fascination with the sport and a desire to spend time in Europe. That said, the racing sequences are still among the most realistic ever put on film, jammed with wide-angle helicopter shots, you-are-there car-mounted cameras, and then-fashionable split-screen sequences. GRAND PRIX is a definitely a film for racing fans.
