supernatural mystery. The best way to appreciate the movie itself is to understand that it's a waking nightmare that needn't make sense in the realm of sanity. Making a flashy Hollywood debut after his superior 2000 thrillerThe Crimson Rivers, French actor-director Mathieu Kassovitz pours on the dark and stormy atmosphere, trapping a competent psychologist (Halle Berry) in the prison ward where she treated inmates (including Penelope Cruz) until she was committed for killing her husband (Charles S. Dutton), who was also her boss. Did a car crash cause her to suffer ghostly delusions, or is a young girl--dead for four years--sending clues from beyond the grave? Berry has to prove her innocence while Kassovitz keeps everything--including the viewer and costar Robert Downey Jr. (as Berry's colleague)--in the dark about just where the nonsensical plot is leading. There's a better movie in here somewhere, among the catwalks and crannies of the impressive prison-castle setting, and Berry gives 100% in a performance that's consistent with the movie's overwrought tone. Attentive viewers will identify the killer early on, and the ending is anticlimactic, butGothikaserves up a few good shocks for ghost-story connoisseurs. --Jeff Shannon

Advantages: A fairly interesting concept for a film. Disadvantages: Does not feel at all like a Horror film and takes itself far too seriously.

When 'Gothika' came out in 2004 I went to see it in the first week of its release. It wouldn't have been my first choice of film, however a friend of mine had been looking forward to its release for some time and therefore I was dragged along to the cinema by him, something I was not complaining too much about as it sounded like an interesting concept for a film and one that I would potentially enjoy a great deal. I am not the biggest fan of Halle Berry in the world, that's for sure, but I don't exactly dislike the actress and have enjoyed some of the roles she has played in the past so that was not at all going to be a problem.
'Gothika' begins with great promise, however the storyline quickly deteriorates and the film is for the most part laughable and the narrative progression is really rather awful. Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) works in an all female mental institution in New England as a psychologist alongside her husband who has the same job as she. What begins with Miranda working in the mental institution quickly turns around and soon she is inside the institution herself. She has no idea why she is here, but soon things take a turn for the worse as she hears of accusations being levelled against her. She is being accused of a crime she has no recollection of, is trapped inside the place she only a couple of days ago worked at, and to make things worse she has lost a couple of days of her life and has no recollection of what happened in those lost days. Miranda's life has quickly come crashing down around her and she must now try to make sense of what has happened and piece together the events of the days she has lost.
What I liked most about 'Gothika' is the freshness of the story. Whilst the plot progresses badly I feel, the idea of it is excellent and is one that I feel easily could have made for a good film. Sadly this is not so, and 'Gothika' is quite a non-event of a film that never really gets going and is in fact terribly tiresome. If you're a fan of Halle Berry then this may make you view the film from a more positive light, however this alone would not be enough to have you enjoy the film. There is not enough going on here to capture the attention and when watching the film I find my mind wandering extremely quickly. I have a very short attention span on the whole, and 'Gothika' is a film that does nothing to try and keep it.
The problem with 'Gothika' is that the film takes itself far too seriously. Had the film been a fun and gory thriller then I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more. As it stands, the film is unexciting and bland, devoid of any real passion and consists of a storyline that you can't help but be tired of by the time the film comes to an end. I was in fact longing for the end to come when I watched 'Gothika' and although I have now watched it again since in order to refresh my memory and provide my opinion of it; 'Gothika' is not a film that I shall be sitting through for a third time in a hurry, never again will I be watching it in fact.
'Gothika' comes from the same Director as the great French film 'La Haine', and the cinematography is by Matthew Libatique who had the same role for the brilliant 'Requiem for a Dream'. With Mathieu Kassovitz as Director and such an excellent cinematographer also; 'Gothika' has no excuse for being as poor as it was. The film has got some brilliant backing and so much could have potentially been made of the film, however the fact that this was not so suggest that the script was perhaps too poor to have done anything spectacular with. Maybe this is not so though, neither of these names have any great history in horror and perhaps this is why 'Gothika' does not feel at all like a horror film. To make a horror film that shuns every horror convention going will just never work, and when those that are masterminding the film are not at all horror experts and instead have made names for themselves in another field; is this ever going to be able to work? The answer to this question is probably yes, however in this instance I do not feel that things work at all well as the film is extremely poor and not even the best acting parts in the world could have saved this film from flopping.
'Gothika' is in no way a film I would recommend to anyone. The film is far too dull and devoid of any real intelligence to make for a great film, or even a remotely watchable one for that matter. The film will pass you by without leaving anything of a lasting impression. The most powerful thing about 'Gothika' is the inclusion in the soundtrack of Limp Bizkit's cover of 'Behind Blue Eyes' and that has to be saying something. 'Gothika' is not a film that I feel will appeal to many, it certainly didn't appeal to me that's for sure and I fail to see how anyone could derive much enjoyment from the watching of it. Having watched the film twice, at 98 minutes a time that is 196 minutes of my life that I will never get back. I'm not at all happy about this and would advise you use your time more wisely than myself and spend the 98 minutes you could waste watching 'Gothika' in doing something a little more constructive.
Advantages: easy to watch with very little thinking involved, talented cast Disadvantages: complete rubbish, not scary, themes pieced together from other films
- a criminal psychologist is just not the same as a psychiatrist and the list of medications given to patients is also erroneous. The film capitalizes on the public's fear of the mentally ill and does little to challenge any stereotypes. Moreover, the ubiquitous shower scene was a shameless capitalisation of the sexuality of Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz.
Overall
I would not recommend wasting your money by going to see this at the cinema - if you have to get it out on DVD or video. Gothika is cinema slop - it uses cheap thrills and stolen ideas to deliver us a film big in style and low on substance. It's a shame as Dark Castle can do much better. ...

Advantages: Quite stylish, will probably appeal to fans of jumpy horror flicks Disadvantages: Absolutely nothing new or original, tired format
a competent horror/chiller and in some ways should be commended for not resorting to too much blood and gore. Had it been made 5 years ago, it would have been innovative and probably would have been much talked about. Unfortunately, it has come along a few years too late, when we are all too familiar with the genre, and the format now seems tired and clichéd.
As a final point, I have absolutely no idea where the title of the film comes from. I was hoping this would become clear, but ? like many other questions I had ? this one remained unanswered.
?Gothika? is currently out at the cinema but I would not recommend that you waste time and money going to see it. If you are not tired of jumpy ghost stories, then you will probably enjoy it on DVD, particularly if there are any extra features that help to give more depth to the story, but be ...

Advantages: Some quite creepy bits Disadvantages: All a bit obvious in the end
, her husband is dead. Brutally murdered with an axe in the home they had previously shared so happily. Worse still, it would seem that Miranda is the prime suspect, with overwhelming evidence against her. Unable to persuade anyone of her innocence, Miranda begins to think that she is losing her mind and she is NOT ALONE….
Gothika is a mediocre film crying out to be a good one. There are lots of good ideas and some nice creepy touches that will certainly entertain and startle in equal doses. But when the final act is played, you are left with the overwhelming feeling that you’ve seen it all before.
Gothika is a ghost story and ghost stories will go one of two ways. In films, ghosts are either malevolent, mischievous spectres who do their best to wreak havoc and terrify people into leaving their homes. Alternatively, they are ...

DVD Description
GOTHIKA stars Halle Berry as Dr. Miranda Grey, a psychiatrist who becomes a patient in her own mental hospital after she is accused of murdering her husband (Charles S. Dutton). Grey's only initial memory of the incident involves a chilling encounter with a distraught girl (Kathleen Mackey) on a rain-soaked road. The incarcerated and medicated Grey is now haunted by the same apparition, and she must convince her former colleague Pete Graham (Robert Downey Jr.) that she is not insane or guilty of murder. Meanwhile, the seemingly mad ramblings of Chloe (Penelope Cruz), one of Grey's former patients, now make more sense, and Grey must throw aside clinical logic to solve the supernatural murder mystery. Kassovitz, who is already a capable actor (AMELIE) and director (CRIMSON RIVERS), makes the leap to Hollywood filmmaking with GOTHIKA. Drawing from heavily from the Japanese horror renaissance that began with RINGU in the late 1990s, Kassovitz conjures up a forebodingly stark and shadowy tale. Berry continues her remarkable string of success (after her Oscar-winning role in MONSTER'S BALL, along with DIE ANOTHER DAY and X-MEN 2), portraying Grey as a traumatised and vulnerable yet determined woman who must unravel the brutal and bizarre knot of her own lost memory. As Grey's work colleague, Downey Jr. adds an intriguing element to the film, and Cruz, as a frustrated inmate, gives an unusual quirky performance. A scare-laden thriller that delights in the strange and the frightening, GOTHIKA proves to be one of the finest of 2003's many horror films.
