Based on Nicholas Pileggi's book 'Wiseguy', Martin Scorsese's GOODFELLAS is a wry, violent, and exhilarating film about the life of Henry Hill, an aspiring criminal who ends up in...
more...the FBI's witness protection program after testifying against his former partners.
As a poor Irish-Italian growing up in 1950s New York City, Hill (Ray Liotta – SOMETHING WILD, UNLAWFUL ENTRY) rises through the ranks of his Brooklyn neighbourhood's organized crime branch, and with money from the mob he begins living the good life, complete with a beautiful bride, Karen (Lorraine Brocco – THE SOPRANOS), a fancy home, and the best seats at the most exclusive restaurants. A botched robbery lands Henry in prison for a brief period of time, and when he gets released, his reckless infidelities and drug abuse damage his associations with his adopted family.
Scorsese's film is a visual and sonic onslaught, featuring a brilliant pop-music soundtrack and stunning camera work--including the infamous Steadicam one-take that introduces the audience to the Copacabana's patrons. He uses the songs to infuse a rhythm into every scene that is at once breathtaking and invigorating. As the psychopathic Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci – RAGING BULL, MY COUSIN VINNY) delivers an unforgettable, Oscar-winning performance that is alarming in its cold-blooded callousness and Robert De Niro adds to the prestige with his quietly calculating turn as Irish hoodlum Jimmy Conway, helping to cement GOODFELLAS' place as a classic portrait of life in the mob.

Goodfellas is rated as one of the best mafia movies ever made and I can't argue with that. As a fan of mafia films and TV series, I myself rate goodfellas above the Godfather as a realistic portrayal of the Italian mafia in America.

Goodfellas is directed by legendary Martin Scorsese (The Departed and Gangs of New York). The cast list is fantastic and I couldn't imagine this film with the parts played by any other actors.

The cast includes Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco.

The film follows the story of Henry Hill who starts the film with the line "As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster." The film begins in 1955 Henry is a boy who quits school in order to work for the Lucchese family running errands and doing small jobs for the wiseguys. Hill grows up under the guidance of Paul Cicero the boss and Jimmy Conway (DeNiro). The film then follows Hill's career from petty criminal to being involved in a major heist, murder and drug dealing.

Although DeNiro and Liotta are excellent in their respective roles, I have to add that my favourite character in Goodfellas is the one played by Joe Pesci (Tommy DeVito). Tommy is a gangster that has a temper and borders on the psychotic. There is a scene in a restaurant where everybody is laughing at Tommy when he is joking around, all of a sudden he goes serious and turns on Henry Hill demanding to know why he finds him so funny, DeVito is of course joking but there is a moment when the tension builds and you wonder what DeVito is going to do. For me it is one of the best scenes in any film I have seen.

Any fan of mafia films must own Goodfellas. For me, like I said earlier it is better than the Godfather, although I am sure a lot of people would disagree with me about that.

Goodfellas is based on the true life best selling 'Wiseguy' written by Nicholas Pileggi. The book is based on the life of the real Henry Hill.

Unfortunately the DVD copy I own is 2 sided which means I have to turn the disc over half way through the film, which is a pain in the ass. You can buy a special edition version of the film though that is a one sided disc with a bonus disc as well.
