DVD Description

Based on Nicholas Pileggi's book WISEGUY, Martin Scorsese's GOODFELLAS is a wry, violent, and exhilarating film about the life of Henry Hill, an aspiring criminal who ends up in the FBI's witness protection program after testifying against his former partners. As a poor Irish-Italian growing up in 1950s New York City, Hill rises through the ranks of his Brooklyn neighbourhood's organized crime branch, and with money from the mob he begins living the good life, complete with a beautiful bride, Karen (Lorraine Brocco), a fancy home, and the best seats at the most exclusive restaurants. A botched robbery lands Henry in prison for a brief period of time, and when he gets released, his reckless infidelities and drug abuse damage his associations with his adopted family. Scorsese's film is a visual and sonic onslaught, featuring a brilliant pop-music soundtrack and stunning camera work--including the infamous Steadicam one-take that introduces the audience to the Copacabana's patrons. He uses the songs to infuse a rhythm into every scene that is at once breathtaking and invigorating. Joe Pesci delivers an unforgettable performance as the psychopathic Tommy DeVito, whose cold-blooded callousness helped to cement GOODFELLAS' place as a classic portrait of life in the mob.

Advantages: Best gangster film ever.
Disadvantages: Have only ever found DVD you have to turn over half way through

...than the Godfather, although I am sure a lot of people would disagree with me about that. Goodfellas is based on the true life best selling 'Wiseguy' written by Nicholas Pileggi. The book is based on the life of the real Henry Hill. Unfortunately the DVD copy I own is 2 sided which means I have to turn the disc over half way through the film, which is a pain in the ass. You can buy a special edition version of the film though that is a one sided disc with a bonus disc as well.... Read review

Another Goodfellas
Review of Casino (Special Edition) by Fantasyman

Advantages: Acting, direction, dialogue, plot
Disadvantages: Violent, Quite long

...criminals so there has to be some. It is not continuous, but there are a few fairly violent scenes. The film is also quite long, I feel that it is quite fast based as a lot happens in the three hours and it covers a lot of story time. You can’t really say the film drags at the characters seem to be continually challenged and threatened. The style of this film is very similar to Goodfellas. It has a similar cast who are playing similar roles. It uses the same device of a narrator. Both are sprawling epics covering a lot of narrative time. Both seem to be cut and edited in a similar way. And both seem to build with ever increasing pace towards an ended in which the violence, foolishness and drugs lead to disaster. In terms of differences Goodfellas is more of a biopic, and the criminals in it are more street level than in Casino. If you... Read review
