Goodbye Charlie Bright, Nick Love's 2001 rites of passage drama about a teenage group of ... more
petty criminals in a steaming South London summer,
was never going to be a massive box-office hit.
But it might prove to be a rather significant
piece in the long run. If Paul Nicholls' star
continues to rise as anticipated, it may well come
to be seen as the film which first revealed his
genuine potential as a big screen actor. The
former Eastenders heartthrob turns in a fine,
sensitive performance as Charlie, gradually
realising that he has to find a way to escape the
constraints of the life that is shaping up in
front of him. However, this isn't solely a
Nicholls vehicle. Roland Manookian is outstanding
as Justin, the dangerous, troubled companion for
whom Charlie is the only source of stability.
There's another good cameo from the ever-reliable
Phil Daniels as an unbalanced Falklands veteran
who becomes the catalyst for the rupture in their
relationship and Charlie's escape. Other familiar
faces cropping up include two more Eastenders
veterans Nicola Stapleton and Edna Doré, and
television presenter Dani Behr who is particularly
good as the nurse Charlie befriends. The story is
slight, but between them, partly thanks to Love's
tight direction and script, the actors in Goodbye
Charlie Bright generate a rather haunting little
tragicomedy with moments of real pathos which
deserves a long shelf life. --Piers Ford

First Love
Review of Goodbye Charlie Bright (Wide Screen) by sghawken

Advantages: Nice movie, good cast, great storytelling (but with little story)
Disadvantages: A few loose ends

...little story but remain interesting; Goodbye Charlie Bright is a prime example of this. For 60 of the movies 80 minutes it literally plods along with this little gang doing fairly mundane things, but still remaining strangely intriguing to the viewer. A lot of the characters and their relationships are never really explained, almost as if this was one of series of movies. I guess you could say the movie is like a grubby soap opera with future storylines ...
...be something incredibly dark. Goodbye Charlie Bright is one of those movies that is easily enjoyed on repeat viewings, each time I have seen it I have identified different interpretations of certain acts and relationships. The movie is quick witted, expeditous in its storytelling, yet strangely dark while remaining enchantingly endearing. I have the original feature free DVD, which has nothing other than the movie and the trailer. However there ... Read review

Life In London Town
Review of Goodbye Charlie Bright (Wide Screen) by RazzaLazza

Advantages: Superb performances, authentic portrayal of life and the importance of friendships.
Disadvantages: The plot line is thin.

'Goodbye Charlie Bright' is the 2001 release from the exceptional British film director Nick Love. As well as this he has also put forward the fantastic films of 'The Football Factory', 'The Business', and 'Outlaw'. This was his first full length film as director, a brilliant directorial début by anyone's standards. 'Goodbye Charlie Bright' is a coming of age film about life in England's capital of London, an authentic and thoroughly enjoyable drama ...
...a tough council estate. The two main characters focused on here are those of Charlie (Paul Nicholls) and Justin (Roland Manookian). Other than Charlie no one particularly likes Justin, they've been best friends for years though and Charlie shows great loyalty towards his friend as this film develops. It's an extremely volatile relationship that these two have, you always get the impression that one or both of them are going to snap and turn on the ... Read review

Goodbye Charlie Bright - Hello Good Film
Review of Goodbye Charlie Bright (Wide Screen) by simoni73t

Advantages: funny, heart warming
Disadvantages: none

A touching East End tale about two friends growing up an a run down council estate, a funny uplifting tale which sees some good acting by lots of favourites including : Paul Nicholls (Eastenders) , Danny Dyer (Football factory/Mean Machine) , Roland Manookian (Football Factory) There's a hilarious first scene where which sees the 3 main lads streaking through the estate past the locals (incl Danni Behr). Charlie (Paul Nicholls) sees his mate leave ...
...to life than scratching around for a few quid and petty thieving, but sticks around to help his best friend Justin (Roland Manookian) who worships Charlie and just wants them to knock around together. The film shows the lads trying to impress the local ladies and generally getting upto no good. Theres a well cheeky little lad (age about 10) in a Millwall shirt who is a right laugh with some one liners. Phil Daniels (Eastenders/ Quadrophenia) plays ... Read review

Goodbye Charlie Bright
Review of Goodbye Charlie Bright (Wide Screen) by memnoch1973

Advantages: Good Movie
Disadvantages: None

A must see for anyone that has seen "The Football Factory" and "The Buiness" as this is the first in the set. Funny at times with some good action. watch some of "The Football Factory" boys make they way on a tough local council estate and make their money their way.. Stealing. lying and cheating. one little boy will have you in stitches with is rude and uncontrolable manner. The opening scene is great, (don't know anyone who would really have ... Read review

Goodbye Charlie
Review of Goodbye Charlie Bright (Wide Screen) by S4MMY_74

Advantages: Great drama, good plot, reflects real life
Disadvantages: Not suited to all personalities

This is Definatey an English classic. With the director, Nick Love making other films such as 'The Football Factory', 'Outlaw' this does meet their standards. The story features a couple of south London estate boys: Charlie (Paul Nicholls), Justin (Roland Manookian) and Francis learn the playground rules as they are brought up in the roots of crime. I enjoyed this film as it reflects real life and took my interest with a great storyline, I wish more ...
...miss. The actors are suited to there roles and play them well. If you like London, Football, Youth, Estate, Drama films then this is suited to your liking, i'm sure others will enjoy this too. I bought my copy from HMV for £3 online it is a lot dearer altough worth it. If you enjoy this movie, which you will, I reccomend: 'Green Street' and other Nick Love films. This is one which you wont to end as the credits come in. ... Read review
