The trend of the past few years has been to gratuitously traipse down memory lane, with the convenient stance that a hit parade of 1970s funk will lend an otherwise bloodless film some street cred. Thankfully the soundtrack to Good Will Hunting doesn't strive for fake urban cool; this film about white, working-class Bostonians gets a mostly white, working-class sound. The soundtrack effectively mirrors the half-filled desires and lives that the film capitalises on: restlessness, ennui, doubt and unrequited love rule here. Elliott Smith contributes the most, and the best, songs: beautiful weepers that outshine Danny Elfman's sombre original score, which makes only a few appearances. --Alan E. Rapp

I have seen this film several times before but having watched it on terrestrial television over the weekend, I felt that it would only be right to justify the film and write a review for ciao.
When I originally watched the film, I had high expectations in one respect because it was already apparent to me that it was Oscar nominated but I had seen a couple ... ...heart strings of its audience; Good Will Hunting is not one to be missed.

I have seen this film several times before but having watched it on terrestrial television over the weekend, I felt that it would only be right to justify the film and write a review for ciao. When I originally watched the film, I had high expectations in one respect because it was already apparent to me that it was Oscar nominated but I had seen a couple of director Gus Van Sant's movies and was somewhat underwhelmed, so this created a mixed anticipation.
SYNOPSIS --------------- Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is a janitor from the south side of Boston, when his supreme mathematical ability is noticed in bizarre circumstances by Professor Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard). The professor takes ownership for deeply troubled Will, but places the most difficult task of working out just what it is that is stopping Will from progressing, in the hands of psychologist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams).
Will has a loyal but strictly blue collar set of friends on which he spends large amounts of time with and a big side issue is his blossoming relationship with the beautiful intellectual med student Skylar (Minnie Driver). Despite their electric chemistry, Will's inability to trust anyone enough to let them into his world properly begins to stifle the chances of the relationship reaching its great potential.
Despite a difficult beginning to their patient-client relationship, Maguire and Will develop a strong rapport which starts to unravel more about the enigmatic Will. The sessions seem to be helping Will get to the root of what has been forcing him to be so defensive around people throughout his life and oddly perhaps the sessions seem to help Maguire start to exorcise a few of his own personal demons.
Skylar is moving out of the area at the completion of her course and this forces a situation where Will has to decide what he wants out of life; Whether it be to stick to his local neighbourhood with his friends and be comfortable living with limited means, finding a highly powerful and well paid career that can channel his great abilities or to pursue what could be the love of his life and follow Skylar.

Though there is relatively few films of this type around, we see this type of character in every day life in terms of celebrities and sports stars but rarely academics, or in this case, a dropout.
The entire main cast perform terrifically and real embody the nature of their characters, but it is Robin Williams who is the stand out performer as Dr Sean Maguire. Williams plays the part with real emotion and really pulls of the facade of playing a man that has had a pretty rough hand but cherishes every wonderful memory.
With a razor sharp script on top of the aforementioned quality of the leading and supporting cast, it is easy to see why this film is viewed in some quarters as a modern day classic. Rather appropriately, in fact, Williams took home the 'Best Supporting Actor' Oscar at the 1998 Academy Awards.
This is a powerhouse of a film that offers will entertain, at times amuse and often pull at the heart strings of its audience; Good Will Hunting is not one to be missed.

Advantages: Emotional drama, performed expertly and written excellently Disadvantages: Can be consider a bit slow in places
...you now have your answer! Good Will Hunting is a film that will toy with your emotions as the story unfolds. Personally, I would consider this a classic, although it will not appeal to those who prefer action and mindless violence to plot and credible characters. Anyway, enough waffling for the moment, what about the plot?

Advantages: A real 'feel good' film Disadvantages: Not for everyone, a bit slow at times
...directed by Gus Van Sant, Good Will Hunting is another of those films from the category I would describe as ‘feel good films‘. What I mean by this is, that Good Will Hunting is a film that will make you happy, sad and sometimes downright angry all in the space of just over two hours. Now films of this ilk are either spectacularly good or spectacularly bad and the key (in my opinion) is the degree to which each of the three emotions are used (bear ... ...grows throughout the film to good effect. Sean Maguire is a quiet and down-to-earth psychologist who is still grieving for his dead wife and is content with teaching psychology at a local college, that is until he meets Will.
The film mainly focuses on Will‘s sessions with Sean and their initial meeting is one of my favourite scenes as Will psychoanalyses Sean based on one of his paintings that he has hanging on the wall. Intermingled with the counselling ...

Advantages: Good Acting, Good Story Disadvantages: Somewhat predictable
...and probably is the last good performance we have seen from Affleck. Although the story centres around Will’s character the pivotal relationship of the film is that between Will and Sean. Both have been damaged by their pasts and both are in their own way cynical about life. When the two men meet there is plenty of antagonism on view. Will despises Maguire for being weak, he sees Sean has having had all the advantages that he never had and yet those ... ...and the two performances are good enough to bring some freshness to the storyline. Robyn Williams is a good actor but for me he always takes his serious roles too far into the realms of over sentimentality and mawkishness. In this film he just about manages to put in a balanced performance. Yes, a few heartstrings are pulled when we find out about the death of his wife but by Hollywood or Williams standards it’s not too overdone. Will’s character ...

The problem with a film that's received so much hype and marketing is that it can never live up to your expectations.......Well, I'm pleased to say that this film, unusually, lives up to the hype and expectations. Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is a genius with a photographic memory but works as a janitor in a prestigious American university. His friends are also from the wrong-side of town (including Ben Affleck) and we get the picture of a very troubled ... ...This is where Robin Williams steps in. He plays a psychologist who is called upon to stabilise Hunting, after Hunting's genius is realised by a maths professor at the university. This is where the film really hots up. The interplay between Williams/Damon is just superb as we learn more about both characters. And on top of all this there is the romantic interest between Damon/Driver to consider! This is a rich, full script that is rare in this day ...

Advantages: Excellent story and cast that continue to impress all the way through Disadvantages: for some the plot being based around mathematics may seem a bit odd
I absolutely loved this film the frist time I saw it and immediately went out and bought it on DVD and from that point on it has remained one of my all time favourite films. It has excellent performances from all the cast, which is fantastic in itself with, Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Minnie Driver and Ben Affleck as well as many others. I think the concept behind it is very original and the way the realtionships build and develop under what are ... ...so many memeorable scenes for me but the one set in the Harvard Bar is the best for me, also known to me as 'when he gets the girl'. I think it is obvious that I am a very big fan of this film and think it is a film that everybody should see. ...

Advantages: Both will stir your emotions Disadvantages: Dead Poets Society is a bit cheesy in parts
Of the two films, I personally rate GoodWillHunting much higher than Dead Poets Society, but to get them together is a bargain, as they're both worth a watch [and then it's up to you whether to watch either of them ever again].
Both are emotionally involving, and both will surely appeal to Robin Williams' fans, as you get to see him in more serious roles while still engaging a little of his fast-paced humour. He's a very noble and likeable character in both films.
You'll definitely be affected in some way when watching these.
