the popular alien of TV's Mork and Mindy into a cinema superstar. Applying a comic touch to the Vietnam conflict in the tradition of M*A*S*H and its treatment of the Korean War, the movie capitalised on Williams's fast-talking improvisation and mimicry by casting him as a madcap DJ. In a novel twist which predates Reservoir Dogs soundtrack dialogue extracts by five years, the album is presented as an Adrian Cronauer radio show, mixing seven clips of Williams's brilliant monologues with a dozen classic tracks which collectively define the era. From "Nowhere To Run" by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, through Beach Boys' "The Warmth Of The Sun" and "I Get Around", "Sugar And Spice" by The Searchers and "Game Of Love" by Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, 60s pop was rarely better than this. Topping-up the veritable jukebox of essential tracks is "I Got You (I Feel Good)" by James Brown and "Baby Please Don't Go" by Them, while rounding off the set is Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World". One of the best pop soundtracks since American Graffiti, this anthology wouldn't be bettered until Forest Gump. --Gary S. Dalkin

How much is Good Morning Vietnam merely a tour de force performance by Robin Williams or how much is it a well rounded complete anti-war film. Sadly my view it is too much just a vehicle for Williams style of delivery and frankly the remainder is very average stuff. Williams plays Adrian Cronauer who s a Radio DJ for the US Armed Forces who is sent to Vietnam in 1965 at the height of the conflict.
This is not to say that the set-piece ... ...as the shock jock.
It is all a shame. I like Robin Williams and loved him in Dead Poets Society and Awakenings. I put Good Morning Vietnam among his less successful efforts but still a lot better than Mrs Doubtfire.

Sadly my view it is too much just a vehicle for Williams style of delivery and frankly the remainder is very average stuff. Williams plays Adrian Cronauer who s a Radio DJ for the US Armed Forces who is sent to Vietnam in 1965 at the height of the conflict.
This is not to say that the set-piece monologues delivered by Williams are not funny, clever, biting, satirical and poignant. They are but we also have frankly absurd arguments with superiors and when the character has a relationship with a local Vietnamese girl and befriends her brother then the film descends to parody.
Cronauer is seen as an irreverent loose cannon by his superiors who inevitably ask him to refrain from the critical comments he has made on air. He is, of course, loved by the poor sods fighting the war and we constantly cut to the troops enjoying his broadcast. The audience is placed firmly on the side of Cronauer and the troops (nothing wrong with that) and the top brass are portrayed as insensitive and bungling (nothing wrong with that either). The problem is it all becomes too one sided. You get the point very early and its driven home again and again. If it were for the excellence of some of the dialogue I think I would have tired sooner.
Barry Levinsons direction does not have the breadth needed to stop this being too 2-dimensional in feel. There are some harrowing images displayed and I think the intention was to contrast the acid humour of Cronauer with the reality of the war. It just does not come off though. The film has no great pace to it and plods along. The sense that it is plodding only becomes more apparent with each scene Williams does as the shock jock.
It is all a shame. I like Robin Williams and loved him in Dead Poets Society and Awakenings. I put Good Morning Vietnam among his less successful efforts but still a lot better than Mrs Doubtfire.
Advantages: Fantastic Comedy, Brilliant Soundtrack and Great Performances Disadvantages: None
...which only heightens the overall good feeling of the film. Some of songs being:
Nowhere To Run To – Martha & The Vandella’s
I Get Around – The Beach Boys
I Feel Good – James Brown
What a Wonderful World – Louis B Armstrong (The Great Sachmo)
At times the action can hit hard and cause you to think a little deeper about what happened in Vietnam. There are some poignant and indeed touching moments which all ensure ... ...of all time.
Don’t mistake this movie for just a platform for Robin Williams to exploit with his own comedy. This movie is lives up to being far more than a one man show. Make no mistake Williams could not do it by himself and the casting has to be applauded. Obviously ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’ won’t appeal to everyone’s taste but most will be able to identify with Cronauer.
Sit back, get in the popcorn and enjoy a masterpiece. ...

Advantages: The film will be a classic Disadvantages: Don't watch if you don't like anti-war films
...Williams film except - Brilliant!!
Good Morning Vietnam is about an air force DJ, moved from Creete to entertain the troops within the early half of the Vietnam War. Never over sentimental, the storyline mixes William's wit and skill in ab-libbing with sensitivity. The anti-war message is clear and although the film was one of many anti-Vietnam films that cropped up in the late eighties, the format appeals to a wider audience because of William's ...

Advantages: Good use of Williams wit Disadvantages: Does not suit the film
This is a very funny look at a very difficult period in american history for a generation brought up on peace and love. The film is set in Viet Nam during the conflict of the 60's and 70's and based around the life story of a "shock Jock" DJ called Adrian Cronehower played by Robin Williams. The radio station that Cronehower works for is a Armed Forces Network station providing information to the soldiers fighting the war. To brighten up their lives, ... ...to tone it down. He also sees the news being altered so it does not demoralise the troops. This he feels is unfair and proceeds to use the radio to tell the troops exactly "how it is". The whole film harnesses Williams comedic wit and spontenaeity as you can see he is blatantly ad libing in places. It also shows the other side of the war with the lives of ordinary Vietnamese people being educated in English by Cronehower in Saigon. The film also ...

...wasn't but there was some good points to it, and this film highlights them.
Robin Williams plays a radio DJ in Saigon who bends and breaks the rules to have a good laugh and tell the truth to his fellow servicemen. A movie which all can enjoy but a few scenes not for the young. A fan of Robin Williams would like this but for the non-fans it might be a little boring for u. ...

Review of Good Morning, Vietnam (DVD)
Advantages: Great monologues, good soundtrack Disadvantages: Not interesting enough as a story.
...lack of tension through a good soundtrack full of well known sixties hits and of course the famous monologues delivered by Williams at his best. I think that this is the films biggest strength. I don't think he is a great actor (too much forced pathos) but he is a great comedian - if you haven't seen a video of his standup routine -please do! Otherwise it is a decent enough anti-war comment. ...

Review of Good Morning, Vietnam (DVD)
In 1965, there isn't much for military personnel serving in Vietnam to smile about--that is, until deejay Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams) takes to the airwaves. In GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM, which is based on a true story, Cronauer is a nonconformist with a wicked sense of humor who is transferred from Crete to Saigon. Outrageous and over the top, Cronauer speaks in accents, creates characters, pokes fun at evertyone--including the President--and spins banned rock & roll tunes. While his antics amuse the masses, they also put him in hot water with his superior officers, particularly Lt. Steven Hauk (Bruno Kirby), who would prefer that the radio show be censored, sanitized, and completely noncontroversial. Cronauer takes his show outside the radio station when he starts to teach Vietnamese locals English in an effort to meet pretty, demure Trinh (Chintara Sukapatana) and befriends her brother, Tuan (Tung Thanh Tran), who becomes an unlikely comrade in uncertain times. Directed by Barry Levinson (DINER, AVALON), the film features a tour-de-force performance from Williams, who improvised much of the comedy used in the radio shows, leading to a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor.
