guarantee any car "gone in 60 seconds") drawn back into the life to save his younger brother from an unfortunate fate. Surprisingly, the music accompanying this car-centric action film isn't the high-speed chase you might expect. Instead, it's a diverse, textured amalgam of styles from the heated polemics of Ice Cube (the explicit version of "Roll All Day" is on the soundtrack, the censored version is in the film) to the art rock of Gomez ("Machismo") and the acclaimed electronica of the Chemical Brothers. Perennial soundtrack contributor Moby delivers the previously unreleased moody trip-out "Flower", while the Cult perform songwriter-for-hire Diane Warren's "Painted on My Heart", which is essentially the AOR the band once sought all those years ago. Best are the collaborations: Groove Armada, featuring M.A.D.; handle "Rap", an ominous, layered, keyboard-based rap; and BT, featuring Soul Coughing's M. Doughty, up the beat cycle slightly for the psychedelically driving and heavily melodic "Never Gonna Come Back Down". --Rob O'Connor

In "Gone in 60 Seconds" Nicolas Cage plays a reformed car thief, who is forced to go back into the business in order to save his younger brother who has managed to get himself into grief with the town's nastiest bad guy. In exchange for the life of his brother, Cage must steal and supply 50 different vehicles, as specified by the bad guy, within a period of just a few days. As time ticks on, Cage desperately has to balance his grand plans, with few resources, and the interference of the local police force, who are becoming ever closer to discovering the operation. The premise is quite simple - a race against time, battling against the odds to save the life of his brother.
So did the film live up to the hype? Resoundingly - no.
Where the film goes fundamentally wrong is within the nature of the plot. Once Cage accepts the mission, a countdown appears at intervals on the screen, to point out how much time Cage has got left to carry out the mission. This is really the only attempt by the Director to instigate any kind of excitement or tension. In his wisdom, Cage decides that it would be best to steal the 50 cars on the last night before the deadline, as the team would otherwise run the risk of being caught by the police before the cars can be passed to the bad guys. This automatically removes any excitement from the days preceeding the last night, as Cage's team aren't really doing anything at all. The key to an exciting "race against the clock" theme is to show things gradually going wrong, and unexpected events changing the way things have to be done. In this film, this simply doesn't happen. The result is that the viewer is left not really caring whether Cage is going to complete his mission at all.
Additionally, the film is full of scenes that are highly implausible. A Porsche driven through a plate-glass window suffers no scratches or dents whatsoever; Cage's team rapidly hack into the Vehicle Licensing mainframe computer to locate the 50 (rare) cars, all of which happen to be available in that town; few of the located cars are stored securely - the actual thefts are portrayed as being very simple; the cars all happen to be in the right place at the right time. It's all just too contrived, and whilst one may expect this from an action movie, the action here is so uninteresting that it simply offers no compensation whatsoever.
To make matters worse, the film suffers from an extremely poor set of characters. Cage himself is inanimate at the best of times and inspires little excitement within his tawdry bunch of colleagues. Vinnie Jones crops up as - surprise surprise - a hard man. Jones' character is mute, which at least spares us Vinnie's attempts at conversation. Jones' wise-cracking partner provided some amusing lines, but even these seemed to wear thin after a while. Perhaps the worst member of the cast is Christopher Eccleston, whose Cockney gangster seems particularly out of place, and is about as fearsome as a Woolworth's checkout operator. This villain is so tough that his prime concern rests with the prevention of damage to his hand-made furniture. Oh dear.
The action sequences within the film are not as frequent as you might expect, and are certainly nothing ground-breaking. The climax of the film involves Cage hurtling off the back of a transporter, in order to evade the police and jump a queue of vehicles on a road bridge. The whole sequence, and much of the rest of the film, had a very "Dukes of Hazard" feel about it- except Duke was probably more credible, and infinitely more enjoyable. There are plenty of different cars here, but I expected to see a lot more of them. For the most part the only parts of the cars that we really got to see were the steering columns, in various stages of undress. The "hero" of the film is a Ford GT40 - Cage's dream car, which has a rather rough ride around the city, and ultimately gets trashed - but not before a few speeded up sequences enable Cage to outrun the police.
For me, the film's saving grace was the energetic sound track, including well-known tunes from Groove Armada and Apollo Four Forty. My favourite piece has to be the music from the Marmite advert (not sure who the artist or title is). The music never seems to rest throughout the film, and most tracks used were well-chosen and well-placed.
Considering the overall budget that this film must have run up, this was a shockingly amateur piece of cinema. I can't help but think that, like me, thousands of cinema-goers were lured into a false sense of security by the presence of Nicolas Cage and the promise of great excitement. Duff, from start to finish.
Advantages: Great film with plenty of extras to keep you occupied Disadvantages: Very formulaic in some ways
...all of his other work, Gone In 60 Seconds is described as 'high-octane', 'an action-packed thrill ride' and 'a hot, edgy action hit'. Despite the usual testimonials (which I'm sure must irritate Mr. Bruckenheimer just a little), this accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. It thrills and excites the audience with action so pure and acute that the silence at the end of the film remains until you get your breath back.
Starring Nicholas Cage as ... ...familiar.
That set aside, Gone In 60 Seconds is a very enjoyable film and if you are willing to suspend your disbelief for just under two hours, it reaps rewards in many other ways. The action is an obvious drawing point and will appeal to anyone fond of Hollywood-sized stunts, rolls and crashes. The acting cannot be faulted and includes some great young talent in the form of Giovanni Ribisi (you may have seen him as Phoebe's brother in 'Friends') ...

Advantages: Good action, nice cars Disadvantages: Action loaded towards end of movie
I've been aware of the film "Gone in 60 Seconds" (GISS from now on) for years now. An old friend of mine used to rave about it when we were younger (much younger) despite the fact he could only remember one bit, and that involved one of those signs that scrolls across and gives out messages which was about 15 seconds worth of the entire movie. He could remember nothing of the plot in general except "it's about nicking cars". So, when I heard that ... ...to see what my friend was raving about without having to watch some crap mid-1970's low budget movie. Before I go any further, it has to be said that the original bears little resemblance to the updated version apart from the title and basic overall plot device of stealing cars - characters, settings etc. are for the most part, different. I managed to sit with my friend and watch the first 45 minutes of the original version a few weeks ago when it ...

...for - entertainment. Gone in 60 Seconds is a prime example of a fun film, slated by the critics for being badly made and wasting a superb cast. They seem to have viewed the fact that the film focuses on fast, beautiful, fast, expensive (did I mention fast?) cars as a bad thing, and whinged about just every aspect of the film they possible could. What they seem to have overlooked is that this film is not intended to be an incisive look at political ... ...search for 'The Ladies of Gone in 60 Seconds' (Ciao do not allow the posting of links in opinions, sorry).

I wasn’t sure about this movie as to whether renting it out or not, but curiosity got to me and I got a copy. I watched it this afternoon and now I’m glad I rented it! The film has fighting, violence, car chases, Angelina Jolie and loads of action. What more could a bloke want? Well, yes, sex, I know, well there is a bit of sex in the film but not enough to get excited over! This is the kind of film which you can relax in front of, forget ... ...action and special effects….a blokes movie then, and yes, I think it is, infact I’m sure it is. I’m trying not to offend any of you nice girlies out there (us blokes bow down to you lot, so why would I want to offend you!?) but it’s just jam packed with all the stuff us blokes love.
Now, I’ll give you a bit of the background of the film. However, if you don’t want to read that bit as you haven’t seen it ...

Gone in 60 Seconds is a great film, if you want fast cars, beautiful women and a great story line, this is the film for you.
The story follows Randolph "Memphis" Raines (Cage), who was the best car thief in Longbeach. His younger brother Kip grows up idealizing his brother, and then he gets involved himself. Kip takes a job, a boost, this means that he is given a list of the best cars out there and he has a certain amount of time to steal them all. ... ...steal this car something has gone wrong. He calls it his 'Unicorn' a creature that is impossible to capture. He steals and everything is going sweetly for about...ummm...a minute. Then comes the trouble, not much though, just the police some roadblocks and a helicopter. I will NOT tell you what happens, I think that I have given enough away already.
The actor is this film is first rate. Nicholas Cage is outstanding, and so is Vinny Jones, although ...
