As Sean Connery was well established in the role of James Bond after "Dr.No" and "From Russia with Love" the public were expecting a bigger and better film with Goldfinger, the Bond films had been making a very high impact on the public and with Sean Connery in the role everyone thought this was just the right role for him. Sean was very happy to return in his role and other cast members in this film were, Gert Frobe who plays "Goldfinger", Honor Blackman who plays "Pussy Galore", Shirley Eaton who plays "Jill Masterson", Harold Sakata who plays Goldfingers henchman "Odd Job", also the old favourites were back such as Bernard Lee as "M" and of course Desmond Llewelyn as "Q"
The opening sequence of the film has Bond setting explosives and disposing of a henchman by knocking him into a bath then knocking a fan in. As Bond then says "Shocking, absolutely shocking" The main title is sung by "Shirley Bassey" in the Goldfinger song that everybody should know by now, and this is one of the best Bond songs in history. We then find Bond away in Miami where Bond meets Jill Masterson who is spying for Goldfinger who is cheating on cards. Bond then sets up Goldfinger by making him loose $10000.00 to the other player he has been cheating on ! Goldfinger is mad at this and sends in his henchman Odd Job who knocks Bond unconscious. Bond finds Jill dead covered from head to toe in gold paint. Bond returns to London and insists he wants to continue with his assignment. Without spoiling the rest of the plotline too much Goldfinger is hatching a plot to plant an atomic bomb in Fort Knox and contaminate the worlds gold supply.
There are some great sequences in this film, the laser sequence with Bond on the table is one of the most talked about sequences ever !, the name of one of the Bond ladies will be remembered forever Honor Blackman playing "Pussy Galore", Odd Job and his killing top hat, Bonds Aston Martin with the smoke screen and ejector seat, and just so much more.
Filming began on this on January 20th 1964 at Miami's Fountainbleau hotel and continued through to Pinewood studios. There was not a lot of locations as in other Bond films, and quite simply the story did not need anymore. The film was released later in the year and was one of the biggest and profitable Bond films.
The DVD itself includes an audio commentary featuring director Guy Hamilton, a second audio and cast commentary by the cast and crew, "The making of Goldfinger" documentary, "The Goldfinger Phenomenon" documentary, behind the scenes stills gallery with 200 photos, Publicity featurette, radio interviews from 1964 with Sean Connery, Making of Booklet, Original trailer, TV and radio spots. On hearing some of the commentarys I find that they are such an insight into the film and what the director was thinking of at the time when it was made, what he wanted to do and how to do it in the film. The cast and crew commentary is my favourite though as you will hear them talk about all they went through when filming this Bond masterpiece. The featurettes, trailers and TV spots have been tidied up on screen and look great for their time.
The soundtrack is in English mono, subtitles English only. Running time on the film without rating special features is 1hour 45 minutes. I am reviewing the region 2 format.
For me this film had so much I liked, being a Roger Moore fan in the role I thought that this was Seans greatest Bond film ever. I cannot think of anything that I do not like about the film, but my favourite parts are the laser on the table, and I will always remember from the first time I saw this was the Aston martin with the ejector seat.
Also during the start of the Bond movies there were a collection of all sorts of toys coming out, cars, figures, lunchboxes, and almost anything had a 007 logo on it as it was a huge moneyspinner at the time. I myself have the Aston martin with ejector seat somewhere but not being born at the time got a new one in the 80's after seeing the film for the first time.

There are a few other outstanding elements of this particular Bond movie: the Aston Martin DB5 is a lovely car (the ejector seat when your girlfriend/boyfriend insists on listening to some crap music would be very handy, never mind the other cool stuff), and the theme tune, sung by Miss Shirley Bassey is one of the best on offer. Advantages: Great film Disadvantages: Gert Frobe as Goldfinger not up to scratch with the others
well onto the screen by Richard Maibaum, the screenplay writer. Shirley Bassey provides the title track of the film, a song to stick in my mind - beautifully crafted and performed.
If there was anything negative to say it would be the choice of Gert Frobe as Goldfinger, as he does seem a little out of his depth in this. He is not very convincing as a villain, so it is just as well he has Oddjob and Pussy Galore, as they are very convincing.
Conclusion
Another good Bond film.
The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.35.

Advantages: The second best James Bond film Disadvantages: Um...
It always makes me groan when someone connected to a new James Bond film entering production inevitably expresses a desire to return to the down to earth Sean Connery films that started the series in the sixties. What down to earth Sean Connery films?! The Connery era was pure pop-culture escapism, with lasers, ejector seats, gadgets, colourful villains with metal hands, hollowed out volcanoes, jet packs, grand scale battle sequences, eye-popping production design, double entendres, quips and a cool, unflappable hero who wanders around constantly amused by himself and his surroundings, safe in the knowledge that the opposition don't stand a chance! In a word it was FUN. 1964's Goldfinger, probably the best known and iconic film in the series, nailed down the James Bond 'formula', set the blueprint for the franchise and launched Bondmania ...

DVD Description
In the third James Bond adventure, the dangerously suave spy's objective is to terminate criminal capitalist Auric Goldfinger (and his assistants Pussy Galore and Oddjob) and foil his plan to contaminate Fort Knox's gold with atomic radiation, a strategy that would dramatically increase the value of Goldfinger's own hoard. With the help of the usual bevy of beautiful women and ingenious gadgets, 007 spoils Goldfinger's fun. Based on Ian Fleming's 1959 novel. The laser release includes interviews, trailers photos and more.
