The general who became a slave. The slave who became a gladiator. The gladiator who defied an empire. These are the words that sum this film up and with only seeing these few sentences you are already intrigued about this film and can tell its going to be a great film (that's certainly what i thought). And i was certainly right as this is, and will be for a while, my favourite film. It has also been rated very near the top (if not at the top) in a variety of lists of the top 100 all time greatest films!
The film is an epic film made in 2000 and was directed masterfully by the great Ridley Scott who has directed other great films including Alien. It is about General Maximus Decimus who is played by the stunning Russel Crowe (who has also featured in great films including "A Beautiful Mind" and "Master and Commander".
The story:
Don't worry I'll try not to give away too much. The story is about Maximus who is a great Roman General and is asked to become protectorate of Rome, yet this
does not quite work out and he ends up being betrayed and is sold as a slave and is forced to fight as a Gladiator. Yet this is where his skills as a gneral come in and he is able to defeat all his opponents (even when he is supposed to lose) and the crowd love him. Chanting "Maximus! Maximus!". He then later fights in Rome in the Colosseum and is also trying to give power to the senate by getting rid of the emperor. Of course, I don't want to give much away so you'll just have to watch it and find out for yourself.
This film is absolutely awesome and is full of loads of action. The films starts with a massive Roman battle and has some stunning graphics with fireballs flying everywhere. The action can become a bit gory with quite a bit of blood, particularly in the arena battles but this just contributes to the realism and quality of this film. I love the fights not only because of the cool sword fight and the excitement and speed, but also of how realistic they are with really nice armour and weapons. But best of all has to be the helmet that Maximus chooses for one of the battles with spikes in the top. There is also some passion in this film with something going on between Maximus and the 'queen' and this adds another dimension to the film. It is generally an awesome plot which has many qualities and is not just all action but includes much more as well as the great friendship and comradeship we see between the gladiators! My favourite part of the film, and line (though i have seen this film numerous times i know most of the lines - shows how much i love the film!) is when Maximus comes face to face with the emperor after a battle in the Colosseum. The emperor, Comodus, asks him to remove his helmet. Maximus does and says:
"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
Russell Crowe is a superb actor in this film and plays the hero character perfectly.
The music in the film is also extremely good and is composed by Hans Zimmer. The music fits in perfectly throughout the film and greatly improves it with some very powerful and strong music during battles scenes and other appropriate music elsewhere. I absolutely love this music and even have a CD with all the music from the film - this costs only £4.99 from play.com.
Of course this film won several awards and made a worldwide box office gross of almost $500,000,000 in the year of its release (2000). Here are the awards it won:
- Academy Awards record 1. Best Picture 2. Best Actor, Russell Crowe 3. Best Costume Design 4. Best Sound 5. Best Visual Effects
- Golden Globe Awards record 1. Best Picture - Drama 2. Best Original Score
- BAFTA Awards record 1. Best Picture 2. Best Editing 3. Best Cinematography 4. Best Production Design
I would recommend this film to anyone (as long as they are over 15 due to its certificate) as it is a must see film and one of the greatest of all time. My sister has even seen it and enjoyed and she always hates this type of film and is only into Girlie chick flicks. So you may as well give this a try! I have had many people ask me what my favourite film is and when i said Gladiator, they would always question why not 300 or Troy? The simple answer is that this film is not only good action and fighting it has a great story, is very in depth and has some of my favourite music from any film!
Price: £4.99 from play.com or £5.99 for the extended special edition
