This film starts off quite weirdly, the first time that I saw it I didn’t know what the start of it was about. Then I realised that it was a large battle between the Romans and their enemy.
It then goes to the roman base camp where you meet the main character, Maximus (Russell Crowe-Proof of Life), who is a general in the Roman army.
The emperor of Rome, Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells him, that when the emperor dies that he will take over instead of his son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
But when Marcus Aurelius tells Commodus this, he is angry, and he kills his father. Because Marcus Aurelius hasn’t told anyone apart from his son and Maximus, no one else knows. So Commodus is declared emperor of Rome, and Maximus is sentenced to death because he refused to serve him.
Maximus is then taken to be killed, but he escapes and kills his supposed killers, except for 2 who run back to the camp and say that he is dead, but the others where killed in the process.
Maximus is wounded and he treks for miles to his home, which when he gets there he finds that his wife and son are dead, because the Romans had crucified them.
He then passed out, and was taken captive by slave capturing people. A rich man, who wants to train him to be a gladiator, then buys him. He sees this as an opportunity to get close to his rival, Commodus, who will be at the competition…….
And this is where I stop telling you the whole story, because if you want to find out more about it you will have to watch the film.
This film is well directed, scripted and has an excellent setting. The actors/actresses in this film are quite good, because they suit their part in the film.
The sound quality of the film is good, and the visual effects are quite the best that I have seen, in a film like this.
But it is a bit on the gory side; I don’t recommend it for queasy or easily disturbed people, because there is a lot of blood and guts, and the occasional flying head.
So I rate this film the gold star award because of its amazingness, oops I got a bit carried away, but it is a good film. I encourage anyone to buy it because it is a film that you can watch again and not be bored.

Advantages: Great fast paced direction. Never slows. Superb fight scenes. Disadvantages: Two and a half hours is long enough to add more plot, the credits are longer than the film.
