Please excuse the title to this opinion all will become clear if you watch the film!
I only recently saw Gladiator on video. All the reviews for the film that I read (am I emphasise “I” ) spewed out nothing but compliments about the film, although I am sure there are probably some bad ones out there somewhere. But being a bit of a sceptic I thought I’d wait and save myself a few pence and a lot of queuing. Something that I now deeply regret, as this is one of those epics, best viewed on the large screen.
The story starts with Maximus (Played by Russell Crowe) on the eve of a battle, his faithful dog by his side. Minutes later all hell breaks lose and as per usual the savages are turned into mincemeat. As the plot progresses, Maximus is asked to lead the Empire by terminally ill Emporer Aurelius (played by Richard Harris, good actor for an alcoholic!), much to the annoyance of Commodus the next heir to the throne (Played by Joaquin Phoenix, who is very good as the bad guy because he has a face you want to slap!!) Commodus Wants revenge and sets Maximus up for a fall. Family murdered and with nothing to live for, Maximus is reluctantly turned into a Gladiator. Enter Oliver Reed in his last screen performance as the Gladiator pimp! (Oliver Reed was one of those actors that had oodles of screen presence and will be greatly missed!) Spurred on by Reed, our hero goes on a killing spree in the Gladiatorial arena winning fans left right and centre. Ultimately Maximius is out for revenge. But if I say more the ending will be given away (although it is a bit predictable!) and I will start getting hate mail so you’ll just have to watch it for yourself!
Directed by Ridley scott, this film could not come with a better pedigree. Other films worth seeing by this director that you may just heard of are:
Alien (1979) starring Sigorney Weaver – Good film Thelma & louise (1981) Starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis – Good chick flick Blade Runner (1982) starring Harrison Ford and Rutgar Houer – Fantastic film, will be reviewed soon!
And many, many more! (one or two duff ones in particular, GI Jane (1996) starring Demi Moore –to suggest this film was bad would be complimenting it!)
The film is now available on video, DVD, etc in normal and widescreen versions, not to mention all the special editions from all good stores as they say on the tv.
Personally I liked the film, the fighting is good, the music atmospheric and the actors well cast and in fine form. Directed by a movie God you can't go wrong!
Warning!! if you don’t like blood and guts avoid it, otherwise buy and enjoy!

Personally I thought Gladiator dragged on a little too long. Good op though. But if I were you I'd add a little more detail on acting, music, etc that you only touched on. Thanks for the addition to your COT, BTW. With ops with as much potential as this one has, it won't be long before you gain people's trust. Just keep reading and rating. :)

Advantages: Great fast paced direction. Never slows. Superb fight scenes. Disadvantages: Two and a half hours is long enough to add more plot, the credits are longer than the film.
