GHOSTBUSTERS (1984)
The story centres around 3 scientists, Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Dr. Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) & Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) who get fired from their jobs at university. They decide to use their knowlege in the paranormal and set up a freelance Ghostbusting business.
They begin at the library where they encounter their first ghost and this is probably the scariest moment in the film and also one of the funniest, although I would say that this one scene is the one that will cause young children nightmares.
Having purchased an old firehouse the business is up and running and they soon get their first customer, Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver), who is having problems within her apartment. Dana soon becomes the love interest of Venkman who is only to happy to assist with her problem. Dana's neighbour Louis Tully (Rick Moranis in probably his best performance) is also affected by the paranormal activity and it soon appears that their building is a gateway to hell.
The initial investigation of Dana's apartment is completed and the ghostbusters set about rescuing New York from all ghosts and spirits. Armed with their proton packs and traps they are soon popular throughout the city making friends and enemies alike with their methods for catching their pray certainly not discreet or careful to say the least!. The first call out they get takes them to a very posh hotel where the have to trap the green ghost (who becomes slimer in the animated series) and the scene where Venkman gets covered in slime is one of my highlights.
Business and publicity booms and the Ghostbusters recruit a fourth member Winston Zeddmore (Ernie Hudson) who takes the job as there is a steady pay check. But the publicity also attracts the attention of the government offices and soon the Ghostbusters have Walter Peck (William Atherton) from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) breathing down their necks.
The story continues and both Dana and Louis are possessed by Gozer, a Sumerian God, and become the gatekeeper and keymaster who need to be kept apart unless hell will be unleashed. It is left to the Ghostbusters to save the day once they have dealt with orders imposed by the courts & the now legendary marshmallow man.
The film has stood the test of time and is certainly not dated with a great supporting cast, great storyline and an impressive comedic interaction between the main characters. Murray is at his sarcastic best and Rick Moranis is fantastic. This film is one of favourite comedies of all time and I could watch it again and again without getting bored. It's camp and goofy but it's exactly what Ramis and Aykroyd, who wrote it, wanted. An interesting fact about this film is that until the release of Home Alone in 1990 it was the highest grossing comedy ever.
The soundtrack produced one of the best theme tunes recorded from Ray Parker Jr and even if you haven't seen the film i'm very confident that you will have heard the theme tune. The movie soundtrack by Elmer Bernstein Jr is for me disappointing but maybe that's down to any comparison with the theme tune.
SPECIAL FEATURES
The interactive menu is one of the best I have seen on a DVD, set around the apartment of Dana and Louis with neon signs for you to select from the options available, while the theme tune plays in the background and marshmallow man walks through the city.
The special features available are:
film makers commentary with Director Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis & Producer Joe Medjuck 1984 featurette conceptual drawings - this feature shows original ideas for the ghosts, ecto-mobile and locations production photos - this is very insightful and worth checking out showing picture of the following: Ghoulish Librarian Loving floating ghost Production team Slimer Spook Central Stay Puft Man Terror Dogs ghostly gallery
GHOSTBUSTERS II
The much anticipated sequel finally arrived 5 years after the original and starts with the Ghostbusters no longer being in business due to restraining orders imposed by the courts, in fact times have got so hard that Ray and Winston performing at children's parties to make ends meet, the party isn't a success however with the children preferring to call He-Man and not Ghostbusters. Ray also owns his own book store, Egon conducts research for the institute for advanced theoretical research and Peter hosts a TV show called "The World of the Psychic".
All of the main characters from the first movie return with Dana, Louis and Janine (the receptionist played by Annie Potts) all prominent in the film. Again Dana is at the centre of the paranormal activity with her son being the focus of attention. Dana works in the restoration department at the Manhattan Museum of Art with Dr. Janosz Poha (Peter MacNicol) who is taken over by a picture of Vigo, a 16th century tyrant who wants to come back to life in the body of Dana's young son Oscar.
The team try to help Dana and discover an underground river of slim built up by all the unrest and hatred in the city but are arrested and soon back in court for violating their restraining order, however the appearance of a couple of ghosts the judge executed soon has their order removed and the boys are ready to face their new challenge, not before the mayor's assistant has them committed to the Parkview mental hospital. Once the museum is covered in a shell of pink slime and the titanic arrives in New York they are set free to try and save the world once more.
Luckily for the Ghostbusters Louis is there to add an extra pair of hands and Rick Moranis again excels in the role of the nerdy accountant. And although the ending is very far fetched it does provoke the laughs a comedy is meant to do.
As sequels go this isn't actually too bad the script is good and the film is enjoyable throughout without losing the charms of the first movie. The cast all perform well and the chemistry between them all remains. For me the plot although not flawless makes this a very watchable film and is well worth purchasing, providing that your not aiming too high, the first was a classic the sequel is good but not in the same class as the first film.
The theme tune is provided by Bobby Brown and was a hit at the time but is not as instantly recognisable as the Ray Parker Jr effort, the rest of the soundtrack is better than the 1st movie with Jackie Wilson's Higher & Higher featuring very strongly.
SPECIAL FEATURES
2 episodes of The real Ghostbusters Animated Series
Also within the boxset is a movie scrapbook which contains
An inside look at the making of Ghostbusters Creating an icon Developing the characters Special effects From paper to celluloid Poster exploration
This for me was the icing on the cake and is a fantastic look in a great franchise.
I managed to pick this up in woolworths for £9.99 in the sale and play.com has this available for £11.99 although its currently out of stock and I can't recommend this enough.
Advantages: Really funny, cheap, special features, PG, everything in one Disadvantages: Apart from the 80's effects (which isn't really a disadvantage) I can't actually think of anything
...all knew what it meant!
Ghostbusters was introducted to me when I was a kid by my dad who loves the films. I think I loved it the first time I watched it, and have done ever since; so when I saw that you could get a boxset with both films, a couple of the cartoons and a little book with some stuff in about the making of the film, and the actors in it for a really good (and I mean REALLY good) price I had to buy it!
I'll reveiw the films here: Ghostbusters ... ...that's what you get in Ghostbusters 2, also in the boxset. The second film is as funny as the first, and contains more great one liners, proton packs and dancing toasters which you might not see in the first film.
I don't prefer either film, I love both, which is why this boxset is so great.
Along with this are two episodes of "The Real Ghostbusters" which feature Slimer more than in the films, but are quite cute and funny as cartoons go. And the ...

After saving the world in the first adventure, the guys are back with a fourth member, Winston Zedmore, employed at the end of the first film when times were good. Ghostbusters is a classic movie with a huge fanbase. Although initially released in 1984, the movie still holds its own today.
A very entertaining film indeed! Funny and heart warming are also words that spring to mind!
