Ahh, the heady days of 1984, pedal pushers, deely boppers, mullets and Ghostbusters - that's right GHOSTBUSTERS.
I can't think of anyone who is around my age group (30) who did not go and see this film at least once in the cinema. For it's time it was groundbreaking, a great story, fantastically comedic performance and the special effects were out of this world.
Anyhoo jump forward 17 years, and me and a few friends are back at my place on Friday night after the pub, we have just ordered a curry and are looking for the perfect post pub fayre, one of the guys shouts out "I've got it" and slams my Ghostbusters in the DVD player, turns on the 32" widescreen t.v. and wacks up the Videologic 5.1 surround sound system. We enthusiastically flick through some of the extras until the curry arrives, (making of, special effects multi-angle shots). Curry is laid out lights are turned off and so begins two of the most fun hours I have spent in a long time.
We absolutely all went crazy watching this film, reciting lines that we knew verbatim, shouting what would come next and absolutely peeing our pants at some of the humour that you get even more being an adult.
This is one of my all time favourite films, as you may have guessed, and I think I enjoyed it the most I have on Friday night since I watched it on opening day in a grubby little cinema in Rotherham all those years ago.
Casting is spot on, with Murray and Aykroyd perfectly feeding off of each other, and Harold Ramis as the "straight" guy Egon. The jokes, coming fresh outta Saturday Night Live work brilliantly. The Special Effects, I know that we are in a CGI dominated world now, but watching this film sure makes you wish that they would try to do it like they used to.
The soundtrack album must have adorned many peoples record collections and sat right there next to Rocky IV and Top Gun (tell me I'm wrong:)), and is perfect for this film.
As for the DVD itself, well, for a 17 year old film, there are enough extras to keep the buffs happy. I had watched the commentary previously and found it really entertaining, and the multi-angle stuff is pretty good also.
The sound is a little disappointing, and the fact that it is in 5.1 only shines through a couple of times. The transfer of the print is pretty sharp, and looks good.
All in all a great film and a great disc.
For a perfect night invite your mates round, have a few jars, a curry and add this film - top entertainment.
