Ghost Story is a strange horror film from 1974. It was directed by Steven Weeks and it is one of my favourite films of all time.

mansion in the country, ostensibly for a weekend of game hunting. Duller (Vivian Mackerell) is sullen and rude, though an excellent shot. Talbot (Larry Dan) is easygoing but puzzled as to why he was asked along, especially when his companions continually ridicule and abuse him. Things get even more curious when Talbot begins having strange hallucinations; he finds himself transported back into time, bearing witness to the trials and tribulations of a young woman (Marianne Faithfull) who once resided in the house. Finally, McFadden admits that he invited Talbot and Duller to the mansion because there are rumours that it is haunted, and he chose them both as likely subjects to draw any spirits out into the open. As the visions become more frequent and detailed, Talbot is thrust into a strange supernatural realm of incest, arson and madness that may be impossible to escape from.

WARNING>>>>> PLOT SPOILER !!!!
The story is about three friends from university, going down to a mansion that had been giving to one of them upon his graduation. It is an old mansion, that he, (McFaden), knows is haunted. He does not make the other two guests aware of this however.
McFaden is played by Murray Melvyn, and he is creepy enough, but he has a sort of gayness about him the whole way throughtout the film, and although most of the time he spends arguing about what he will have for breakfast the following day, he breaks his boredom by psychologically abusing his long suffering "friend" Talbot.
Talbot is the one however, who the ghosts appear to. They need his help and throughout the film, they tell their story.
Talbot however, cannot comprehend what is happening, and thinks he is going insane.
The last half of the film is amazing. DO NOT WATCH IN THE DARK !
Advantages: Starts well Disadvantages: Disappoints towards the end
Four elderly friends, Ricky, John, Edward and Sears, meet on a regular basis to tell ghoststories, much to the dissatisfaction of their families, who have to put up with their terrible nightmares. However, it seems that a secret that they have been hiding for fifty years is coming back to haunt them when one of Edward's twin sons dies, after meeting a mysterious woman who reminds the four friends of a woman they once knew. When Edward dies, the friends realise that they are really in trouble. Can they, along with Edward's remaining twin son, work out how to stop the chain of events they started all that time ago?
The fact that Fred Astaire stars in this movie, in his last film role before his death, was the main thing that persuaded me to watch this film. As Ricky, he gives a competent performance, particularly when you consider ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of Ghost Story DVD
Advantages: Very well acted and directed movie Disadvantages: Some scary parts not suitable for young children.
we begin to sense that there are other forces at work other than Cole being a disturbed young child. The movie features a wicked twist at the end, although if you watch the movie closely you will see the tell tale signs.
The direction
Perhaps not very evident from the movie, the direction in this movie is excellent. Shyamalan has managed to direct an excellent ghoststory with an actor perhaps more famous for his thriller and action roles, and with an unknown child actor. Additionally, as you will find out in the ‘extras’ on the DVD, he is not afraid of cutting out major parts of the film so that it flows better and doesn’t give too much away early on and confuse the audience. I look forward to many more great films from this young and talented director.
The acting
Bruce Willis is surprisingly good in this ...
Advantages: Great acting and a great twist Disadvantages: May be a little gory for some
for one was totally fooled.
Shymalan has cleverly combined an excellent ghoststory with an almost simplistic twist in the tale; he has disguised the twist with clever camera work and use of colour.
Shymalan has somehow managed to turn an actor more famous for his comedy or thriller roles into a sensitive actor that portrays frustration, anger and love. Additionally, his casting abilities are exceptional as he has found a super star in the making.
I was pleasantly surprised at how good Bruce Willis was in this show. Having seen him as a wisecracking character in Moonlighting and as a rough and tough ‘normal’ man in Die Hard it was interesting to see him use his obvious acting skills for a change.
Haley Orment is perhaps the best find in the acting world for years. The role he ...
