Ghost is one of the most moving films I have ever watched, it makes me cry every time I watch it. A love story about life and death, about the importance of saying goodbye to your love ones and making each day count by telling them how you feel before it’s too late.
Story:
Molly Jenson (Demi Moore) and Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) are a young couple who are very much in love, having just bought an apartment together they are looking towards a happy future.
Sadly their happiness is about to be shattered, on a night out together they are attacked and Sam is stabbed. At first we are led to believe he is till alive but then becomes clear that he is in fact dead and looking at his own body limp in Molly’s arms.
At first he does not realise that he is dead, we are presented with images from his life flashing before our eyes and the haunting sounds of Molly’s screams for help.
We now enter two worlds alive and dead, Molly is struggling to come to terms with her loss in the world of the living and in the land of the dead Sam is struggling to understand that he is no longer alive.
Sam soon becomes aware that his death was no random occurrence and that he was in fact murdered by a man called Willy Lopez. Desperate to let Molly know what is going he visits a spiritual advisor for help.
Ode Mae Brown is a spiritual advisor who has never had any real contact with a spirit before; she is infact a con artiste. Suddenly she starts to hear a voice in her head and she is freaked out and refuses to believe what she is hearing. Sam is desperate to get her to help him and talks and sings to her non stop until she agrees go and see Molly.
As the story unveils it seems that the couple best friend Carl Bruner is also involved with Sam’s death. Ode Mae desperately tries to convince Molly that Sam has been in contact with her but she finds it hard to believe.
My Thoughts:
I have fallen in love with this film, as it has great mixtures of drama and romance along with an element of comedy and sadness. Throughout the film you are taken on a rollercoaster of emotions.
My favourite scene is at the beginning of the film when we really get to see the love and passion between Molly and Sam, as well as being my favourite part of the film it is also the sexiest part. They start become intermit with each other over the pottery wheel, but not in the obvious sordid way that some films depict such scenes. It is delicate and subtle showing the tenderness they have with each other. The backing music of ‘Unchained Melody’ also adds emotion to the scene and really helps to create the mood with the words.
I also really like the clever way they show the differences in the two worlds, the special effects really help to depict this. Heaven is depicted by a shining light and hell is shown by moving shadows and scary sounds.
The scene where Sam learns he can channel his emotion to move objects is also very clever and entertaining. He meets another ghost on the tube and together they start moving objects around.
The acting in the movie id excellent, it must have been very hard as they need to do lot of reacting to things as apposed to interacting, because Sam is a Ghost he cannot be seen and he is unable to physically touch anyone.
Characters:
Molly Jenson is played by the very talented Demi Moore; Molly is an artiste/sculpture, she is desperately in love with her partner Sam Wheat, they have just bought a place together and she is thinking about marriage. Her world is shattered when Sam is stabbed and killed, he dies in her arms and she is left with emptiness. Demi Moore was chose for the role because of her strength and maturity, Molly is a strong character an actress who could show emotion with out having to brake down was required.
Sam Wheat is played by the hunky Patrick Swayze, Sam Wheat is an investment baker, he is happy with his life and totally in love with Molly. Am never tells Molly that he loves her and only ever says ‘Ditto’ when she says it to him. Sometimes life is too short and you should say how you feel, a fact that Sam finds out when he is killed. Sam’s ghost is left in limbo as he is ready to go yet, he needs what happened to him and help Molly find his killer. Patrick Swayze was excellent in this role, his acting is very isolated as nobody interacts with him on screen as they can’t see him, and this means he is responsible for showing all emotion. His face and eyes tell you how he is feeling a lot of the time. Patrick however was not the first choice for the role and it wasn’t until his audition when he had the casting team in tears did he convince them he was the man they where after.
Ode Mae Brown is played by the multi talented Whoopi Goldberg, Ode Mae is a con artiste known by the police as a fraud, she tells people she can contact the dead but until she meets Sam she has never actually spoken to a ghost. Ode Mae becomes a go between Sam and Molly and in affect life and death. Ode Mae’s character brings some humour to the film which could become very depressing, she lights up the screen with her funny faces and humorous attitude, her over the top outfits also add colour to the screen. Whoopi Goldberg is a great comic actress and her performance in this role is no exception.

Advantages: Good story, Disadvantages: A little bit dated in places
...to think that the film Ghost starring Patrick Swayze was made 17 years ago but when I sat down and watched it on the TV the other night this became apparent for two different reasons. Firstly there is no denying that in places this film now seems to be a little bit dated, whilst secondly I was amazed how little of the film I actually recalled from having originally first seen it all those years ago.
Ghost is primarily a love story but this is a ... ...his body and become a ghost looking at his distraught girlfriend but powerless to comfort or help or to even let her know that he is OK. From this point onwards we see Sam all around the house, with Molly at work and watching her wherever she goes but she is unaware of his presence. It soon however becomes apparent to Sam that his death was no unlucky act, but instead that it was pre-planned and furthermore it seems that their best friend, Carl Bruner ...

2003 sees this film become a teenager, in terms of age I must add, as it was made in 1990, and was the runaway hit of that year. It looks at the subject of death, and is there life on the 'other side', but I must add that it is approached from an emotional level rather than having any scientific fact to back it up, which some viewers may find a little hard to swallow, and admittedly, I was one of those people who thought that this film wsa only famous ... ...and Demi Moore make a suggestively shaped vase on a potters wheel with 'Unchained Melody' playing in the background.

Ghost has always been one of my favourite films, it’s one of those films that is something completely different to what you first thought it would be yet it still manages to exceed all prior expectations which is the reason that despite being nearly 20 years old it’s still watched today and is considered to be a modern classic. We did not take the time to watch these so cannot give comment on them.
The running time of this film is 98 minutes which both me and hubby found very suitable as it meant the story kept moving at a good pace from start to finish and did not drag. The certificate on this film is a 12 which I think is a little high and I personally would let a mature child of 10 years and up watch this. Yes there is some strong infrequent language in the film but nothing that they could not hear in on of the other programmes on the TV or indeed walking down the street.

. The use of four well-known actors gave it a classier feel, although I think I would have liked it with or without them. I can't give it more than three stars because of the flaws in the plot, but for anyone who likes thrillers and ghost stories, I really think this is worth a watch.
Sadly, it doesn't seem to be available as a region 2 DVD, but the region 1 version, for those of you who have the capability to play it, is available from play.com for £6.36.

~~~Introduction~~~
Ghost World is a comment on our times, told from the point of view of three misfits. Caustically funny and very touching, this film, which is based on a graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, may have passed you by when it came out at the cinema (it is amongst a number of films, such as Donnie Darko and Zoolander, that got lost amongst the events of 9/11 and only discovered on DVD). If so, I recommend you read on and consider looking it out.
~~~The Story Line~~~
Enid, played by Thora Birch (American Beauty), and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) graduate from high school. They hate most of what is around them and rebel. They are far too cool to follow their class mates to college, choosing instead to find a place to live together, taking local jobs which require little commitment. In playing a cynical trick on a man who has ...

DVD Description
After renovating their expensive loft in the TriBeCa area of downtown Manhattan, Molly (Demi Moore) and Sam (Patrick Swayze), a yuppie couple, are walking home one evening when Sam is tragically gunned down by a street mugger. Molly goes into a deep depression, but, unknown to her, Sam has come back as a ghost in order to protect her from danger--although he isn't yet aware who or what means her harm, and he has a lot of learning to do in order to make himself known to her. He teams up with an unwilling psychic, Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg), and together they try to convince a very sceptical Molly that Sam was actually murdered and has returned spectrally to complete some unfinished business. Moore and Swayze and are excellent as the couple, and Goldberg won an Oscar for her portrayal of the wild and wacky psychic. GHOST is considered by many to be one of the most romantic films of the 1990s.
