When i first got this film off my girlfriends shelf and looked at the back, i immediately thought, this is going to be a good one. After watching it, i'd make a slight alteration to my prediction, and instead say, it could have been a good one. Do not get me wrong, this is a good film, its a safe watch for some horror thrills, but thats all it is, its nothing spectacular, which i had hoped it would be when i had read the back of it.
To sum it up, the beginning sets up what could be simply an amazing film. The ending again, is pretty good. What this film lacks is an original middle. It follows the same old horror story line of a group of people getting trapped with no way of communicating with the outside world. What makes this film different though from the others with its beginning, is that it actually gives us a place where it is quite easily concievable that no communiaction can be made with the outside world, due to it being set on a very large derelict boat, with no means of escape.
What makes this film so deliciously set up, is the beginning bit. Its the most perfect part of the film. Normally people will not give away the end of a film in a review, but to give away the beginning would be daylight murder, just because, when i watched it, it seriously disturbed me, and quite honestly laid way to what could have been one heck of a film, if the same dark and sinister plot was carried on.
The major let down that prevented this from happening was the ghosts basically. It kind of gave the film a slightly quirky feel as to everything is explained perfectly though the supernatural, yet leaving one nagging plot hole that could have been taken to much large depths making the film far far better. Its just seems to be the same old tired, well almost slasher movie, as everyone except one dies and miraculously escapes.
This is the sort of film that would provide a safe watch if you were bored, but it is nothing to get jumped up about sadly. It is a good film, but that is all it is. Horror buffs would probably find it boring and repetative, while people new to the genre would probably find it the most amazing film they have ever seen, until they watch something far far better.

Advantages: Excellent scary movie, with plenty of funny moments thrown in. Disadvantages: there are a lot of this type of film about, so this may get lost in the mix.

Review of Ghost Ship (DVD)
Advantages: You can laugh at your 'I'll look after you' boyfriend when he jumps at the first sign of anything gruesome. Disadvantages: Its winter, they're in Arctic waters, they're in the middle of the ocean, yet this silly girl seems happy waltzing around in a little t-shirt rather than a jumper. Hmm.
