I've got the film of friend who likes to buy commercial horror films from Internet. CD circled among friends and acquaintances for a while. Nothing too spectacular. Many people saw it by now. This is DVD movie, not the cinema kind. I guess you can call it Sunday afternoon film*. You don't have the need to keep CD, but yet the film keeps on circling.
This is a classic big budget horror. A yacht crew running on ship-wreak floating on the sea. Inhabited husk of a long-lost Italian ocean liner. Here, we have violence, graphic details of horror, some nudity, and creepy sexual situations. In short, everything that one horror needs.
But, let's get this straight. Italian ocean liner, cruising the coast of Labrador, went missing sometime during the 60s. All that we see is, the well-dressed passengers getting sliced in half, by a cut cable. Creepy, strange, impossible…whatever! Forty years later, a veteran crew of a SOS boat is recruited by a Canadian air force, to confirm the sighting of a lost ship, somewhere on the Bering Sea. Is that the long-lost ocean liner? Once they're in, entire crew is having the hallucinations, seeing ghosts of the people who died on that ship 50
years ago. Team leader Epps [a woman of course] isn't sure what to make of this discovery – which is well dressed little girl she thinks she sees from time to time? She and her crew are sure of one thing: They all think, what the ship holds is going to make them very rich. But strange things are happening on board the Antonia Graza*. The discovery of a digital watch from 70s in the navigation room indicates that someone has been here before.
"Ghost ship" has everything here, ghost-warms & shadows crawling around their food and dead people luring them into dangerous positions. But you knew that right from the start! "Ghost Ship" is essentially a movie about a group of characters stuck in a floating haunted house. In general, the usual staff. The staff that every horror fan likes: dead people hanging around, freaky deaths, a lot of blood, haunting of greed and bloodthirsty ghosts… There is one thing pretty certain, "Ghost Ship" can not be compared with lets say "The Ring", but I am sure that there has been and always will be, ghost haunting horror fans. The kinds of films that always make money. So lets not talk about deeper meaning, because there’s no deeper meaning in all this. Just plain entertainment. "Ghost Ship" boat is solid but boring plot. Okay, so we're dazzled when a guy falls through a rusted-out section of the rotten floor, yet I see no one hide behind seats?
"Ghost Ship" is ruined by such an insultingly cliché of an ending. It's up to the director to generate the feeling of raising tension, to remind us that something nasty might be lurking in the shadows.
Walking through its dark corridors with flashlights, Epps is the first to catch a startling glimpse of a ghostly little girl in a dress, the sweet angelic yet enough hypnotically, who, is to become her spirit guide through the terror. Little girl takes Epps by the hand, revealing her a supernatural vision: the ship's history and the diabolic reason for their souls are still on board. It's quite predictable to see a true horror movie, without leaving gaping holes in the plot. This is all about making a cliché plot, with nothing in between lines. I know there are always a time for such films. I enjoyed it hollowness and simplicity, just as the predictability. As long as you do not expect anything else.
Acting in this film may be described as not demanding shallow entertainment. Catchy characters, pretty actors, pretty colors, simple plot, chain jingles…I guess that an actor is only as good as the script. There are all the usual characters involved here – a black man, a "bitch", intellectual, big mouth mechanic and a few others. The cast doesn’t really have enough material to shine and make a good acting. The cast make a decent attempt though I’m sure however, that they are all quite good actors, after all. To imagine a context, in which "Ghost Ship" could be worthy of seeing, film shows a little of solid craftsmanship. I guess that this genre must rely on shock tactics, suspense elements, and things that non-of these films are lacking with.
Well yes, special effects? The special effects are fantastic by all means. A special effect technician knew exactly what he was doing, following the usual patch on the computer. Once you are in, there's rust everywhere suddenly turning to a wonderful de lux ship hotel, with Franceska, a super woman Italian singer, died 40 years ago. Her seduction of a black flash &blood visitor is such a pattern. Effects that we all long to see over and over again. "Ghost Ship" is a film that needs some tolerance from the viewer. Fans of the horror genre will probably find it easier to hold off disbelief for just long enough. The film you either dislike or like very much, but only if you are personally keen of classic high budget horrors. Teenagers would love it as well as grown up. Also bigger children would probably hide behind the doors, all curious to see chain jingles & spooky pale little girl on the television screen.

I think the first ten minutes of this film are amongst the best in any horror film, but it does go down hill very fast there after. Stuart

The best parts i liked were, when the metal wire cut everybody in the Ball room & when the 2 blokes chewed on Maggots in the illusion of food. Did make me puke then. jedi_kickass ( ' _ ' )

Advantages: Excellent scary movie, with plenty of funny moments thrown in. Disadvantages: there are a lot of this type of film about, so this may get lost in the mix.

Review of Ghost Ship (DVD)
Advantages: You can laugh at your 'I'll look after you' boyfriend when he jumps at the first sign of anything gruesome. Disadvantages: Its winter, they're in Arctic waters, they're in the middle of the ocean, yet this silly girl seems happy waltzing around in a little t-shirt rather than a jumper. Hmm.
