The overall rating of a review is different from a simple average of all individual ratings.
Advantages:
You can laugh at your 'I'll look after you' boyfriend when he jumps at the first sign of anything gruesome .
Disadvantages:
Its winter, they're in Arctic waters, they're in the middle of the ocean, yet this silly girl seems happy waltzing around in a little t - shirt rather than a jumper . Hmm .
Recommendable

Built in 1954, the ocean liner Antonio Graza, was the Queen of the Ocean. It had a grand Ballroom with a live orchestra, and a large swimming pool - the passengers were in the lap of luxury. Then came that fateful day in Spring 1962, which saw the Italian Liner disappear into the sunset, blissfully unaware that this voyage would be its last...

She went missing on 21st of May 1962, just off the Coast of Labrador. She never once made any distress call - she just disappeared...
Enter our unusual heroes, aboard the Tugboat Arctic Warrior. These people love their job, but would love to find an easy way out - preferably with lot's of money! Our heroes are experts in their fields who, for a price, will locate, repair, and recover any missing or abandoned sea vessel.
There
are some fantastic actors cast in this film, and some fantastic roles are played. Canadian Air Force pilot Jack Ferriman recruits the team to investigate a mysterious vessel he has spotted floating adrift off the coast of Alaska. They don't know it yet, but accepting this mission would be the biggest mistake of their lives. The ship is home to something more deadly and horrific than anything they’ve ever seen. Even in the deadliest of nightmares...
Ghost Ship combines exhillarating high seas action, along with a chilling storyline. For good measure, stick in a fortune in unmarked gold bullion that could make the crew millionaires, and suddenly everything goes pear-shaped, with the crew fighting between each other for their want of the gold. Add sinister visions of the ship's original passengers and crew, including sexy singer Francesca, vengeful young girl Katie, and the bloodied waiters/villains who plot to take over the boat, and horror city here we come!
Creeping along its dark corridors with flashlights, Maureen is the first to catch a short glimpse of a ghostly little twelve- year-old girl in a lacy dress. Katie, the sweet, yet eerie pre-teen, becomes Maureens ghostly guide for the rest of the film. Katie, at the time of the one event which massed killed, was dancing with an elderly relative of hers.
The horrific death used in this scene involved wire of some sort being pulled over a balcony above the busy Ballroom, whilst unsuspecting couples were dancing. The wire pulled taut so as to slice through or decapitate nearly every adult in the Ballroom at the time, like cheese wire cutting through a block of cheddar. This scene is definitely the goriest. We see that Katie herself was saved, as, being small, the wire just skimmed the hair on her head. We also find about about the disgusting circumstances in which Katie came to a horrific end. We see what happens and feel her pain as she is sexually abused in front of her parents murdered bodies and then brutally killed.
The apparition takes Maureens' hand and shows her a vision of the ship's history and the reason their souls are still wreaking havoc on board, including a quick recap over her own death. Maureen is convinced she won't be believed if she tells her crewmates what she's seen, and so keeps Katie a secret, until, after hearing the sound of a woman singing over their radios (Francesca), finding a lit and lipstick covered cigarette, and stumbling onto dead but fresh bodies, the crew realise something is seriously amiss.
First Mate Greer finds himself in the ballroom with everything coming back to life around him, tables upright themselves, dinner plates pile with food, the chandelier repairs itself from its shattered state, and rises from the floor to the ceiling, and all of a sudden he's surrounded by passengers while Francesca - whose photo he'd seen earlier, seduces him! I won't ruin the ending, but as crew and apparitions gradually turn against each other, there are more twists and turns than the Corkscrew rollercoaster. I wholeheartedly recommend you rent this film if you feel like a fright night in, as it is a creepy, although maybe not 100% original film. A bit like a less spectacular, and very cheesy, Titanic.
With plenty of gore in the film, there will be something for all those blood-loving people out there, without there being too much. I feel that the balance they got was almost perfect, as a little bit more gore would have been better. The film may not appeal to everyone, but the effects it has are very detailed and realistic, meaning I could watch it over and over again.
Whilst this Warner Brothers film is directed by Steve Beck, I believe 'Thirteen Ghosts' and 'The Matrix' both better this film. If you are looking for horrors, 'Thirteen Ghosts' is a lot more scary, gory and truly original. Steve Beck has also done some visual directing in 'The Hunt for Red October' (Visual effects art director in 1990), 'The Abyss' (Effects art director in 1989), and 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (Visual effects art director, also in 1989).
The film was produced by Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis and Gilbert Adler, and is adapted from a book written by Mark Hanlon.
