Being an avid horror freak I tend to get very excited when a new horror film has been released, in the genre not a lot happens these days and when it is released (sorry Deano) we end up with crap like Jeepers Creepers – I rest my case! Anyways, there was me sitting there minding my own business when I happened to come across a trailer on my favourite movie site (http://www.movies.com) a few months back, I didn’t just get excited, I practically pee’ed my pants as Julia Robert’s once said! This film didn’t just look spooky, it looked like it had a story line, these to things in 1 horror film and it was made in 2002, was it possible? So, I set out about watching the film and here’s my opinion on, ‘Ghost Ship’, Mel xxx
What’s the Film About then? I think where my film synopses go this is going to be the shorted one to date. Mainly as this is such a complexed film with a fantastic story that I don’t want to give anything away to you if you haven’t see in. So, here’s a rather basic over view on it… Some salvagers are told about a ship adrift somewhere in Bering Sea. They go out there and find the luxury liner to find it is the ‘Antonia Graza’. This cruise liner was thought to have gone missing in 1962 along with all the people on board. In order for them to loot the ship (A bit like modern day pirates) they have to repair it due to its size to get it back to port. The crew then all
start to go through some strange supernatural happenings and are trapped on the boat, unable to leave. Welcome to the Ghost Ship <menacing music>!!
Tell me about the cast, directors and what not. The main cast is as follows; Gabriel Byrne plays the part of Captain Sean Murphy, Julianna Margulies plays the part of Maureen Epps, Ron Eldard plays the part of Dodge, Desmond Harrington plays the part of Jack Ferriman, Isaiah Washington plays the part of Greer, Alex Dimitriades plays the part of Santos, Karl Urban plays the part of Munder, Emily Browning plays the part of Katie Hargrove. The film was directed by Steve Beck (directed Thir13en Ghosts and also was art director on The Abyss and The Hunt for Red October). Mark Hanlon wrote the story and also the screen play for the film. It was made in 2001 and in the UK was certified an 18 certificate. This mean it is unsuitable for anyone under the age of 18 to watch. The film contains violence, sexual content, offensive language and gore. So it really is not acceptable for people under then age of 18. The film was originally released 25th October, 2002 in the US. It approximate running time is 88 minutes long.
Where can I buy this film and how much for? The film is not available to buy yet on DVD for region 2 and I cannot find any copies on VHS either. According to some sites online I have looked at, the release date for the DVD seems to be 21st July although you can pre-order on most of the websites I have found. Here’s some websites that will be stocking and some pricing information;
SplashDVD (http://www.splashdvd.com) for £10.99 including postage and packing. MX2 (http://www.mx2.co.uk) for £11.98 including postage and packing. Play.com (http://www.play.com) for £11.99 including postage and packing.
Are there any extras if I buy it on DVD? As the DVD isn’t available yet I can’t comment on the extra features. However I can tell you what will be included on the DVD as I have found some websites with information on. • Behind the scenes documentary (15 mins) • 'Secrets Of The Antonia Graza': a tour of the ship (15 mins) • 'A Closer Look at the Gore': a prosthetics featurette (6 mins) • 'Designing The Ghost Ship': a production design featurette (6 mins) • Visual effects featurette • 'Not Falling' music video • Interactive menu • Scene access I will definitely be buying this on DVD to check out the extra features, some of them look really good. Roll on 21st July (which is apparently when the DVD is being released).
My Final Conclusions on Ghost Ship. The best thing I loved about this film was how it started, it was so misconceiving! There you are sitting down thinking you are about to watch some romantic episode of ‘Love Boat’ or something from the music, and in the first 5 minutes all hell breaks loose! Myself and my friend K who love horror films passionately both sat there in shock, what a beginning! My hats, clothes everything really go off to that idea! The acting was quite believable. I always find in horrors it’s pretty hard to act like they should, let’s be honest… how many of us really have had our families hacked to pieces and know how it feels? How many of us have a brother like Michael Myers? See I rest my case, we don’t know how we would act so from a actor/actresses point of view it can’t be easy pulling off believable emotions. In this film however they achieve it. They achieve the look of shock, fear, horror and greed. I was impressed! And I’ll be honest with horror films it really does take a lot to impress me! The storyline, although not realistic was original (I know it has been done before but not done to death nor like this!), it kept me occupied and didn’t bore me. It wasn’t too slow which I hate and there was plenty going on. Also, when the film does turn on its head and all come together it really is impressive; whoever came up with the ideas for it really was intelligent and imaginative! So, my over all opinion on Ghost Ship, watch it! IF you haven’t seen it, watch it! If you have seen it and didn’t appreciate it try watching it again! I watched it twice before it really sank in for me. It’s not overly scary or frightening; I would say it is spooky though. The special effects are great in it and it’s worth seeing the film just for them really. I give the film 9 out of 10 as I thought it was great, however I am still waiting to watch the ultimate film this summer (Which I know is going to be crap but hey, I’ve got to see it just to see Kelly Rowland get killed! If you fancy checking out the trailer as you are a horror freak too, go to http://www.freddyvsjason.com), ‘Freddy versus Jason’. Mel xx

Advantages: You can laugh at your 'I'll look after you' boyfriend when he jumps at the first sign of anything gruesome. Disadvantages: Its winter, they're in Arctic waters, they're in the middle of the ocean, yet this silly girl seems happy waltzing around in a little t-shirt rather than a jumper. Hmm.
