Thats what the packaging on the DVD claims, but to an avid horror fan, this really isn't the case.
Ok so there maybe the odd part that makes you jump slightly but there's nothing really special in Ghost Ship that you haven't already seen in other movies.
Well, that's been a bit unfair really, the slaughter scene at the beginning of the film is really good with plenty of blood and guts for any horror fan, but sadly that's the most gore you'll get, except for the odd swimming pool of blood.
Anyway enough of this banter, let's get on with the story of the film:
In 1962 the Antonio Graza mysteriously disappears, with all it's crew and passengers, jump forward to present day and we meet a salvage crew, hired by a young pilot to salvage an abandoned ship, the Antonia Graza. But when they get there, they find that there is more to this ship than they first thought and each member of the salvage crew is killed in a brutal, horrific way.
Well that's about it really there's not much more I can say about it, as this would give away the twist and end to the film.
Ghost Ship is brought to us by the same team as 'House on Haunted Hill' and 'Thirteen Ghosts' and I can quite honestly say, having all these DVD's that 'House on Haunted Hill' is still the best of the three (so far).
The acting in Ghost Ship is nothing special either with Julianna Margulies (ER) been quite wooden at times and Gabriel Byrne (Stigmata) looking like he was forced into taking the roll. But all said and done the star of the film must be the Ship, how can the ship be the star? I hear you say. Well the sets are superbly designed with the ship decaying after been afloat for 40 years, the corridors and rooms are really creepy and this adds to the amotsphere for the film.
The sound on the DVD is quite well done and the Dolby 5.1 is made use of quite well, as in 'House on Haunted Hill' you can here strange noises on the rears giving you the feeling that there is something there with the salvages, music is used well and doesn't seem to overtake the voices of the actors.
The picture quality is superb, the colours are crisp and the dark areas are clear and not grainy or blocky.
There are a few special features on the DVD but nothing that really jumps out and says, "wow, look at me" these include:
Deleted footage Untold Tales Several documenteries on the ship, gore and visual FX Music Video (Mudvayne) Theatrical Trailor And Enhanced feature for DVD-Rom
Overall I enjoyed Ghost Ship, but personally I think that Dark Castle have a lot of hard work in front of them to top 'House on Haunted Hill', but don't get me wrong the films not rubbish, it's an enjoyable film to watch and fits nicely in the collection with the other Dark Castle DVD's, but if you are expecting a all out shocker then you are not going to get it, unless you really have a low fear threshold then it will make you jump several times.
Thanks for reading my Op. Karen
Ps This is the Region 1 DVD

Advantages: You can laugh at your 'I'll look after you' boyfriend when he jumps at the first sign of anything gruesome. Disadvantages: Its winter, they're in Arctic waters, they're in the middle of the ocean, yet this silly girl seems happy waltzing around in a little t-shirt rather than a jumper. Hmm.
