This is my first review on the horror genre. Ghost Ship was released in the US for the Halloween season and made its way to the UK recently. The Ghost Ship was an Italian luxury Cruise liner Antonia Graza built in 1954. On its voyage to US in 1962 it suddenly disappeared never to be seen again until 40 years later.
The story moves onto a motley crew of a salvage ship. Gabriel Byrne plays Murphy, a sympathetic Captain and father like figure to the remainder which includes Epps (Julianna Margulies) the only woman in the crew.
They just had a successful salvage and are celebrating when a stranger appears. He tells them that he is a pilot and has seen a wreck of a cruise liner in the Bering Sea. For a percentage of the salvage profit he agrees to give them the location.
After little bit of debate the crew decide to salvage Antonia Graza. The stranger makes them agree on him going with them.
Once they get to Antonia Graza a chain of events turn an ordinary salvage to a game of death as they get marooned on the Ghost Ship. They quickly learn that something weird is happening on the ship and they are not the only ones on it.
Now that the scene is set you got to ask yourself:
What demonic forces are residing on the Ghost Ship? Can they trust the stranger who brought them here in the first place? Will any of them get out alive?
This film borrows all the stereotypes from the horror genre that one can think of. The usual suspects are here, dark and eerie scenes inside the ship, The crew meeting their fate according to their cultural background, like a drunk Irish Captain and a black man who can't resist an exotic singer until it is too late.
There are a number of negative points about this film. The story is very simple and has been told many times before. There is no character development especially the Captain Murphy character played by Gabriel Byrne.
Apart from the opening 10 minutes or so when you have the extraordinary scenes of the original crew and passengers meeting their maker the film goes down hill.
But for some reason the film is not that bad and is still watchable although some critics might try to convince you that it is a lame duck.
The best parts i liked were, when the metal wire cut everybody in the Ball room & when the 2 blokes chewed on Maggots in the illusion of food. Did make me puke then. jedi_kickass ( ' _ ' )

The opening scene was good - I liked the expressions on the peoples faces - ludicrous! But after that it was a load of old plop. Great op.
