Stunt motor-biker, Johnny Blaze (played by Nicolas Cage) sells his sole to the devil in an attempt to save his terminally ill father’s life (he's dying of cancer).
The devil however deceives Johnny, and although his father does infact make a recovery, he sadly dies the very next day when a stunt goes horribly wrong.
Shgortly after the death of his father, Johnny turns his back on the carnival, his friends and his girlfriend Roxanne (played by Eva Mendes) .
Years later we catch up with Johnny Blaze who is now a world famous ‘dare devil’ stunt man. Since selling his soul to the devil all those years again Johnny has discovered that he simply cannot die!
Mephistopheles (the devil – played by Peter Fonda), turns up again as he promised he would and offers to release Johnny's soul if Johnny becomes the his ‘Ghost Rider’, a supernatural agent of vengeance and justice. (This to be honest is something that Johnny really doesn’t have a say in!).
The devil charges Johnny with defeating his nemsis and son, Blackheart. Blackheart plans to displace his father (along with his scary friends) and create a new hell even more terrible than the old one (scary thought).
My Opinion
Ghost Rider is a very enjoyable film!
Nicolas Cage plays the character of Johnny Blaze brilliantly in my opinion and you can sense that he had real fun with his character which shows throughout the film. (well hey getting to drive a demon bike and having your head turned into a skull and set alight – got to be fun right?!). Seriously though I enjoy watching Nicolas Cage films and this one didn’t disappoint me.
The special effects were very good (although I am no expert and don’t claim to be), but the way in which it showed Johnny change from stunt rider to ghost rider was very cleverly done indeed.
Good performances also from Eva Mendes and Sam Elliot (Sam played the Caretaker - a previous ghost rider of the devil many years ago).
Peter Fonda's portrayal of the devil was a little bit wishy washy for me, but it didn't spoil the film - I just think he should have been more 'demonic'.
One thing I can say is please don’t take this film too seriously, I mean after all it was based on a comic book story! But it is ideal if you want to watch a fun film, plus the sound tracks not too bad either.
