influenced the Matrix films in the U.S. The long-awaited sequel continues the adventures of Batou, Major Kusanagi's former assistant, who was left behind when she disappeared into the cyber-realm of the Net. With his new human partner, Togusa, Batou investigates a series of bloody murders involving gynoids, robots with sexual functions. The case leads them to the headquarters of the Locus Solus company, where Batou uncovers the evil secret behind the creation of the gynoids. Innocence includes some staggeringly beautiful CG images, especially a parade depicting characters from Chinese mythology. Oshii contrasts this glittering beauty with a Blade Runner-esque dystopia. But even his skill as a director can't disguise the fact that the underdeveloped story and flat characters are far less interesting than the opulent visuals. --Charles Solomon

Advantages: stunning graphics, great storyline Disadvantages: comparable to the first film
.... There were times I was so sucked into the film that I thought those places could be real. CG has really come a long way. The graphics were special in the sense that the film didn't seem CG'ed (not like Shrek - now the whole of that film is just CG'ed quite obviously). The characters were anime (2D), the scenery was also anime, but added to the scenery (and not to the characters) was that element of CG which added to the style of the film. This is a great fusion between 2D and 3D - of course, we are still talking about anime here, and I certainly wouldn't like it as much if the whole thing was animated completely in 3D.
[Thoughts]
This film is just wonderful and is one of my favourites. I have also seen ghost in the shell 1, and thought Innocence was better (although I saw that after Innocence and on the laptop, so might not be a fair...

Advantages: A truly thought-provoking work of art Disadvantages: A somewhat uneven plot
...and not that interesting; the Sly & Robbie musicvideo is nice, as it showcases the urban cityscape and other visuals of the film quite well, though the musical accompaniment is a little unremarkable. The database contains some character and maker info, but really is passable reading. So outside of the behind the scenes featurette, don't get your hopes up for some uniquely mind-blowing in the way of extras.
THE ENDING REVIEW SUMMARY (capsule)
Overall Ghost in the Shell is one of those animes that is just required viewing for anyone interested in the art form. The film has its problems and may require multiple viewings to fully absorb, but there is no denying that this is an infinitely intelligent and deep piece of cinema. Whether the film actually answers the questions it raises is up to the viewer to decide (I'm still not quite sure myself...

Advantages: Great Quality and music Disadvantages: Shoddy US dub
...Entertainment and ADV. It is preceded by a Movie, Ghost in the Shell and it precedes a second series, Ghost in the Shell; Stand Alone Complex; the 2nd GIG and a second movie, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Both this series and the next are standard 26 episode animes which, if you ignore the credits, run for about 22 minutes each.
The subtitles are good as they are done by ADV, but the menus are sometimes hard to read due to the colours chosen in the design process. However they are very bright using good music and pictures. Unfortunately the dubbing is America's standard very low quality. As I've said before and will no doubt say again in the future, American's can't dub unless its a very odd bit of blind good fortune. The voices sound cheesy, annoying and the lip syncing hasn't worked. On the other hand the Japanese voice overs are excellent...
