With GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN', rapper Curtis 50 Cent Jackson follows in the footsteps of his musical counterpart, Eminem (8 MILE), by giving movie stardom a shot. Directed by Jim...
more...Sheridan (IN AMERICA, MY LEFT FOOT) and written by Terence Winter, the film tells a fictionalised version of 50 Cent's own troubled life story. Marcus is a quiet young man who adores his loving mother (Serena Reeder). But after she is brutally murdered in an apparent drug deal gone wrong, Marcus heads down the wrong road himself. He abandons high school to sell drugs for local kingpin Levar (Bill Duke) and his underling, Majestic (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). Years later, when he reunites with his childhood sweetheart (Joy Bryant) and is thrown in jail, Marcus decides to leave drug selling behind in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a rapper. Unfortunately, Majestic doesn't want to let him go, resulting in a tragedy that might destroy his life forever. Much like Curtis Hanson with 8 MILE, Sheridan seems an unlikely choice to direct an urban drama about the blossoming of a gangsta rapper. But that is exactly what makes his film so refreshing. Photographed with a gritty tenderness by Declan Quinn and featuring another scene-stealing turn from Terrence Howard, GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN' is equal parts social commentary, crime thriller, and heartfelt drama.

Let us get some of the housekeeping out of the way. I do like 50 Cent, I can stand G-Unit, but if you think all rap music is rubbish then this film will irritate you more than itching powder.

I don't own it on DVD, and I wouldn't, but I saw the film on opening weekend at the cinema and it was a fun film to watch with friends who have a common interest with me. If you want to rent it or watch it when there is nothing else to TV, that would probably be the best idea. And if you hate 50 Cent you may even want to watch it with people and pick at the flaws of the film.

For starters it is not a realistic account of his life at all. After pretty much the first 5 minutes (which is actually a scene from later on in the film, gotta love flashbacks) you'll see how unbelievable it is. The music is all his though, and it is a good soundtrack as it was recorded before he started 'having beef' with P Diddy.

There is violence, guns, swearing and for the ladies you may enjoy a heavy session of 50 Cent fighting in the shower naked with other men. That's right, there is nudity. But what else would you come to expect from a film that is about getting rich or dying trying.

Get Rich Or Die Tryin' is by no means the worst film I have ever seen, and it was enjoyable to watch. It's a journey through a life from boy to man with a lot of problems on the way, and if you understand that it is not really a true story on 50/Curtis Jackson's life then you might have a better time with it.

Fiddy, don't quit the day job.
