If you are a Football fan (English!) you must own this DVD as it celebrates one of our finest moments in sporting history, to really understand the hype one needs to understand the events surrounding this.
England start the World Cup campaign in dismal fashion after losing the opening game 1-0 to the Germans in what was the last game to be played at Wembly instantly followed by Kevin Keegan resigning his post as manager. England stumble in following games as it appears are only hopes of qualifying rely on a play off position.
On September 1st 2001 England travelled to Germany to play in the Olympic Stadium in Munich. This is a game England must win if they are to have any chance of gaining automatic qualification, however Germany have only ever lost once at home in World cup qualification (about 70 years) and this is the Germans they always beat us (ever since 1966!). History is against us but as always the English public demands victory.
The game begins on a late Saturday evening as I stand in a packed pub, everyone is singing and pumped up.
Six minutes into the game, the ball is played
into the England box, the two central defenders remain static and Carston Jancker scores to put the Germans 1-0 up. The pub goes deathly quiet and no-one moves.
12 minutes, Beckham crosses a ball into the box the goalkeeper comes and misses, Nicky Barmby cushion heads a pass to Michael Owen who calmly puts the ball into the back of the net 1-1!. The pub erupts we are back in the game and the confident mood returns.
Just as it seems that are going to go to half time level Ferdinand heads down a pass from Beckham and Stephen Gerrard hits an unstoppable shot from 25 yards and England are 2-1. The pub erupts into huge cheers, which can be heard from across the otherside of town. Its half time and nervous chats starts, surely we cannot hold onto this scoreline?
Just 2 minutes into the 2nd half and another move started by David Beckham results in Michael Owen scoring again, its 3-1 and now everybody is singing and jumping in the pub.
66 minutes gone and the pub is having a real party atmosphere, Gerrard hits a ball to Owen who runs at the German goal before casually beating the keeper it is now 4-1. It is one of those rare moments as complete strangers in the pub are hugging each other, the moment has not really sunk in as even at this stage I am wondering if the Germans will come back.
and then after 73 minutes Scholes hits a pass to Emile Heskey who calmly makes the score 5-1, surely this must be a dream, Heskey scoring!, I rub my eyes in shock. The pub is going wild, there are chants of we want six.
Then one of those magic moments as the TV camera shows the match scoreboard as streams of German supporters leave the ground with 20 minutes to go.
The final whistle goes as we all remain in the pub to drink the rest of the night away.
If you are not satisfied with just getting the game, there are also some handy special features which is a nice touch.
For the Statto's amongst us, something that I am not ashamed to admit to! there are some interesting stats. The match statistics whilst a little basic give a breakdown of the game. Much more helpful are the player cams, these give an overview of several of the England players performances.
There are player profiles which give the details of the England players as well as several post match interviews.
For the lazy fan there is also a feature called "Goal Frenzy" which allows you to just watch the goals.
Finally the DVD includes highlights of the Under 21 performance, which was held the night before.
The game shown on this DVD was that shown by the BBC and commentary is from the ever dependable John Motson who is supported by Trevor Brooking.
The DVD layout is very clear and easy to access, the match is broken down into 12 chapters which allow you to pick particular moments if you chose to.
If ever I feel down this game instantly cheers me up, if only we can produce this performance more often. What makes this more special is the team we beat, not for any childish nationalist reason as I respect the German team but for the fact they are one of the best teams in the World.
All this happened while I was taking my missus out for her birthday. I've done some stupid things in my time but.......

Enjoyed the review simply because it was one of the best England performances I've seen in recent years, with only the demolition of a very good Holland team coming close to it during the 1996 European Championships. England games seem to be made up of magical individual performances (Malcolm McDonald Vs Cyprus, Gazza Vs Scotland) but this was probably the best team perfomance I've witnessed.
All the relevant info is there, and even though most of it was familiar to me I think it deserves a "VH" for content, display and passion. Particularly liked the way you tied in your night down the pub. Well done.
