Advantages: captivating story, great historical aspect of the somewhat obscure region Disadvantages: very few, has some scenes of torture which are not for the faint hearted
The Last King Of Scotland was perhaps one of the best historical films i've seen in a long time. the storyline was easy to follow, which seems like a odd thing to say but i find with many historical films, you often lose scope with "when a certain event happened" to "why on earth did that just happen".
Based on the true events from the life of the autocrat IdiAmin, the films tells the story from the perspective of the Doctor played by the lovely James McAvoy (one for the girlies!). the films portrays the racist- tribal and someone brutal ideology in Uganda. with amazing cinematic production as well as capitivating roles played by the beautiful Kerry Washington - who plays Kay Amin (was also in save the last dance) to the oscar winning Forrest Whitaker.
the intensitiy protrayed in some of the scenes is brought across beautifully ...
Advantages: good value, lovely grdens and poolside Disadvantages: slow check in, naff music
I have just came back from spending a lovely sun-soaked week in Marrakesh in Morocco. I had a fabulous time and also found a hotel that I would really recommend which is the Hotel Amine.
We booked the four star Amine through Teletext. I had initially set my heart on a small riad (traditional courtyard style house) in the middle of the medina (the old town). We ended up at the Amine in Marrakesh's new town because I was holidaying with a female friend and we wanted a twin room. The Amine was the only one where we could definitely book a twin room rather than just request it. My friend is a lovely person but I did not fancy sharing a double bed with her so the Amine was booked for £100 for a week's bed and breakfast.
We arrived at the hotel after a 20 minute transfer from the airport by taxi. The standard rate for this is 150 Dirum ...
Advantages: Great efforts all round Disadvantages: Drags a little at times
, the title of the film is more a reference as to how the two lead roles met, and swapped shirts, Garrigan discarding his Scotland T-Shirt to wear Amin's General's uniform.
IdiAmin was considered one of the most murderous of African rulers. The extent of this is mercifully kept from us to a certain extent until near the end, and it is worth pointing out that there are some harrowing scenes of torture and death as the film progresses. These are handled well, but are upon us before we expect it, and the effect is astounding. It transports the film to a new level, and completely changed my perception of the man Whitaker was portraying. Amin was shown as a charismatic and loveable rogue with a presence and the air of a great host and President. Later in the film, the actor turns on the evil, and gives us a true taste of his talents.
So, did ...
