About the video ~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Gardens of the World' with Audrey Hepburn was a nine-episode documentary television series of 1993. It was the last television project completed by actress Audrey Hepburn, who died the day before the first episode of the series was aired.Hepburn was supposed to have donated all her earnings received for the project to UNICEF, where she was actively involved.
This Series won an Emmy Award for 'Outstanding Individual Achievement - Informational Programming' for Audrey Hepburn. In this DVD Audrey Hepburn and actor Michael York do a marvelous job of narrating the history of the different gardens and providing information about some of the plants and flowers that are grown there. In fact, they touch upon a lot of other interesting subjects besides the garden they are visiting, like the important people who visited the particular place, and some titbits regarding those visits, and about the changes that the garden has undergone etc; Hepburn visits altogether 17 gardens in the Dominican
Republic, England, France, Holland, Italy, Japan, and the United States..
The video has been beautifully conceived and equally well executed. The two-sided disc contains footages of Audrey Hepburn visiting some of the world's most beautiful gardens, plus eighty minutes of great music-only the tracks, and two great behind-the-scenes segments showing Hepburn at her charming best, interacting with the technicians , and even digging and giving a hand to an obviously pleased gardener..
I bought this DVD just to watch Audrey Hepburn. I love watching her films and find her an extremely elegant and dignified personality. She had become better with every passing year, developing an allround personality, never being pretentious ever, not while she was a star , nor now.She was a down to earth, warm and likeable person, and thats what makes this video so special- her sheer presence, the way she dresses so elegantly and the way she carries herself.
When i watched her amidst all those out of this world , Lovely gardens, i felt that the two matched perfectly, each complementing the other. She seemed to be the right person to have done this series with her keen eye for details and an obvious interest in gardening.
She chats with the gardeners, exchanging tips and providing some informations of her own experiences as a gardener. She is very natural about it with no airs what so ever. One can see the admiration and warmth she generates, as she interacts with various people across the world, as she visits these gardens.
A great deal of historical information on gardening is provided on this video, and we get to see different types of gardens namely the Japanese Zen gardens, which is absolutely marvellous with its water body and rockery, Some lovely traditional Flower gardens like the English Rose Garden , and Formal or planned gardens like the Tulip Gardens in Holland.
The Formal Rose Gardens that she visits are breathtakingly beautiful.Hepburn keeps quoting a few lines of her favorite poems on several occassions making the proceedings even more interesting. The Dutch Gardens shown were truly magnificent , the visuals breathtaking to say the least- absolutely marvelous photography.
Actor Michael York has done an excellent job with his narration. He is an integral part of this video complementing Hepburn's visits and adding narrations ,tips and comments of his own Even if you are not a fan of Audrey Hepburn , video is worth watching , as this a well made DVD and it is a chance to see all those wonderful gardens at one go. Audrey Hepburn quoting gardener Anne Leighton "A garden, to be a garden, must represent a different world, however small, from the real world....Gardening offers man a chance to regulate at least one aspect of his life--to control his environment and show himself as he wishes to be."
