Gardens Of The National Trust - Vol. 3 (DVD)

Advantages: cheap days out once a member, enjoyable and educational at the same time
Disadvantages: locations often mean a car is needed

...card, a car sticker, the handbook of places you can visit and a magazine every 4 months. The big selling point is of course all the places it entitles you to visit. Recently we've taken to planning our holidays around which National Trust properties we can visit, initially as a money-saving plan but now because we've enjoyed the ones we've visited so much. For example, if you were to go to Kent for a weekend you would find you were within driving distance of a fabulous castle, Rudyard Kipling's house, a charming 14th century moated manor house and Winston Churchill's home, to name just a few. If you found yourself on the other side of the country in Cornwall you could visit several stunningly beautiful gardens, an amazing Victorian house and a tin mine, not to mention enjoy free car parking at lots of coastal locations. Overall I'm awarding a 3 star rating, dispite it appearing they've actually put some effort into the DVD e.g. by addiing bonus trailers, interviews and clips it still doesn't detract from the point that it's not a good series and is really aimed at little children. I'm still surprised Rowan let this go ahead, although Mr Bean wasn't his creation, it is his image and the new t.v. series ruins what was a classic masterpiece 'Mr Bean'. Advantages: gardens are lovely
Disadvantages: house in not very exciting to look at

...This Saturday was Heritage day and many National Trust Properties where open to the public with free entry. Being local we had visited Knightshayes many years ago but thought we would take this opportunity to take the kids for a freebie. The house was disappointing to view, particulaly with kids. There is no kitchen or a nursery to view, which I always think are the most interesting rooms in a house as they have changed the most over time. Just bedrooms and reception rooms. The gardens however are well worth a visit, they are glorious. There is something to look at in every direction with many interesting features. There is plenty of room for everyone and numerous families were enjoying a picnic.
