Gangster No.1 was released in 2000 where Lock, Stock and Two smoking Barrels and Snatch where the two highly praised best British Gangster films. With these two gangster films out Gangster had a lot to live up to, and it did just.that.
The violent story of the rise and fall of an East End London gangster, starting in swinging 1968 Soho, and spanning 30 years it shows brutal murder, sticking torture coming from the eyes of the victim and also by the about of times the word Cunt is used though out in the film. But also did you know that Freddy Mays is based on real-life notorious mobster named Frankie Fraser.
The film starts with a group of friends at a boxing match dinner at a deluxe London hotel, Gangster now aging sits at the top of the table, (played by Malcolm McDowell) becomes upset when hearing...is due to be released from prison. He leaves and he remembers in flashbacks how his young self (played by Paul
Bettany) first joined the vicious mob.
The year 1960, the swinging 60s where in London, money and woman where plentifully and gangs fought round every corner for power and the position King of underworld. This is where Freddie Mays nicknamed Butcher of Mayfair (because he killed a bent cop and got away with it), and underworld king, (played by David Thewlis) comes in, Freddie is well dressed always with the right woman and has the fanciest cars first his red E-type Jag and his blue Aston Martin. Freddie has an expensive flat the onyx and gold everywhere.
Business is good, he loves his new power and comes across an unnamed psychotic thug (played by Paul Bettany) named to us has Gangster. Freddie takes him under his wing has his right hand man and together with Tommy, Mad John, Fat Charlie, Roland, Billy, Eddie all Freddie's Men there make a force to be reckoned with.
Gangster finally wins Freddie trust by dealing with his enemies from rival, wither that is dropping a car on mechanic's head or torturing or brutal murdering.
Freddie and Gangsters relationship is threatened when Freddie goes to a nightclub and falls for a no-nonsense dancer named Karen (played by Saffron Burrows) and Freddie proposes to her. Then things heat up and spiral out of control has Gangster feels left out has Freddie sees more and more of Karen so Gangster lies in wait for an opportunity to change things, and that moment comes when he learns that Lenny Taylor (played by Jamie Foreman) and his top man, Maxie King Freddie main rival planes to kill Freddie. Instead of warning Freddie like Roland (played by Razaag Adoti) wants too, Gangster kills Roland and then he watches has Freddie is gunned down and Karen has her neck cut.
Than this is the main scene that sets Gangster No.1 apart from Lock, Stock and Two smoking Barrels and Snatch. Gangster happy that Freddy is dead and goes after Lenny first shooting him in his leg and once Gangster undresses down to his underwear he resumes his attack on Lenny. Though Lenny's eyes we see Gangster constantly kicking Lenny has well has brutally attacking him with a wine bottle, an axe, an ice pack, a machete and even a fruit bowl and verbal abuse. We see Lenny drift in and out of consciousness with sound fading in and out until the picture fads out when Gangster rams Lenny's head though pane of glass... Will Lenny Survive? There is twist that comes... ...Gangster gets another shock and someone is unjustly convicted of the murder of... ...receiving a 25 years prison sentence, but who will it be?
From here we see Gangster from the year 1969 gain power of the underworld, where he gets rid off most of Freddie's original men and recruits his own to 300 strong men and has the years go on Gangster is fixing horse races, done a Brinks Heist and we also see that he runs his own casino. Now the year is 1999 where the film started and Gangster is portrayed by Malcolm McDowell.
With bachelor of arts degree Freddie finally is free from prison and all he wants is peace and to marry his women Karen who wanted for thirty years for him. However gangster is not happy with Freddie and threatens him with a gun then Gangster hands Freddie the gun begging him to shot him. What will Freddie do?"
Finally Gangster goes mad, with just his underwear on we see him on the roof of tall block of flats laughing. What will he do?
This a film you must see!
