<<PLOT>>
Modern day: It's twenty years after the original "Galaxy Quest" last aired on TV, and now the actors of the Sci Fi show are reduced to signing autographs for sniveling, costume-donning teens at conventions.
But one day, their lives are turned around as Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), the egotisical actor who played Commander Taggart, gets a visit from some real life aliens! These aliens have recieved broadcasts of "Galaxy Quest" episodes through space, and have interpretted them as actual historical documents detailing the heroic sucesses of a real-life spaceship. Since their homeworld and their race are getting destroyed by evil, green reptilian thugs, the aliens ask Commander Taggart and his crew to command their spaceship in defeating the invaders.
Of course, "Commander Taggart," along with his "crew," are only actors, and now they must bumble ineptly through space, trying to save their alien friends and themselves.
<<ACTING>>
Tim Allen -- Jason Nesmith Sigourney Weaver -- Gwen DeMarco Alan Rickman -- Alexander Dane Tony Shalhoub -- Fred Kwan Sam Rockwell -- Guy Fleegman Daryl Mitchell -- Tommy Webber
One of the highlights of this movie is definitely the great ensemble acting. All the talented actors seem like they are embracing their roles, having fun working with each other, and valuing their time onscreen. And their energy shows through to us, the audience.
Just watch the beginning scene when the Galaxy Quest actors are waiting impatiently backstage at the Sci Fi convention for Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) to show up. Their snappy dialogue and quirky character traits grab your attention right away and lead you through the rest of the movie.
This is one of the rare movies that has a wonderful, upbeat, talented ensemble cast in which every character is equally enjoyable to watch, and no one uncomfortably upstages someone else.
<<PRODUCTION>>
The sets, costumes, and special effects are all top notch! The "earth" scenes offer you all the over-the-top eye candy of Sci Fi conventions, while the space scenes have quality computer generated spaceships and aliens. (Keep in mind though, this is a 1999 movie, and the computer effects aren't as mind-blowing as, say, Lord of the Rings yet.) The aliens and outer space props are purposely over the top, perfectly spoofing the Sci Fi genre.
<<REVIEW>>
This movie is a big parody on Star Trek, and if you have watched Star Trek, you be able to understand many of the inside jokes poking fun at the 1960's TV show. (So, Trekkies, if you haven't seen this movie, see it!)
But if you're not a Trekkie, by no means feel left out. I didn't watch Star Trek, and actually had no interest in space Sci Fi movies when I first watched this movie, and it was thoroughly enjoyable just the same.
This is because this movie POKES FUN (good naturedly, of course) at the whole Star Trek show and Sci Fi fans. You'll love the opening scene at the Sci Fi convention, showing the hundreds of rabid fans in their ridiculous costumes and donning their high tech communicators and weaponry (read: plastic toys).
The scenes aboard the actual alien ship are abound with purposely contructed Sci Fi cliches, such as landing on a random planet that just happens to have breathable air, being transported to and from the ship in a Teleporter-like device, and being able to communicate with other aliens (in English!) on the ship's viewing screen. Of course, this movie takes everything one step further and adds disaster and the "Galaxy Quest" actors' many blunders to the mix, creating great comedy as a result.
But the most surprising thing about this movie is that it has HEART. Before I watched it, I thought that this was just another Hollywood Big Budget concoction that simply throws huge special effects and a thinly veiled story in your way, but as it turns out, this thankfully isn't. Every aspect of this movie is committed and genuine, from the acting to the script, to the special effects. The script, while it is not Academy Award caliber, gives plenty of good dialogue, and yes, even thought provoking moments. The acting is very believable and upbeat, which gives an added sparkle to the movie.
Basically, Galaxy Quest is a very well made comedy spoof that doesn't try to be pretentious. And because it doesn't have -- and doesn't try to have -- any of that Hollywood Blockbuster feel, it comes off as an enjoyable, quality flick that Sci Fi fans and just casual moviegoers can watch alike.

An impressive DVD worthy of the film! Sharp image, wonderful surround sound that takes full advantage of your speakers. There aren't any technical problems that I've experienced.
The special features include extended and cut scenes, which are extremely enjoyable to watch! Most of the time, cut scenes on DVDs are tedious and boring (the reason why they are cut) but these scenes must have been cut purely for pacing reasons. They are hilarious, such as the scene where an alien shows Alexander Dane (Rickman) his room... complete with a torture-like bathroom device and a bed of sharp spikes.
There is also a short production feature that gives you a look at the sets, alien creature process, and cast interviews. Not too in depth.
Easter eggs (extra stuff hidden on some DVDs) include additional cast interviews. Go to the actors' bio pages and press the cursors on your remote until you highlight a round button of a film reel.
A funny and ridiculous extra is the Thermian Language Track. You basically can watch the whole movie in the screechy, howly alien language. It's hilarious (if you're as easily amused as I am) but it soon gets old after ten minutes.
<<OVERALL>>
Yes, if you haven't seen this movie, give it a try! It's very entertaining, doesn't require too much thinking and analysis, and is appropriate for everyone. I have enjoyed watching this movie a couple of times with my friends, and it makes a great party movie that provides some good conversation afterwards.
Advantages: Superb acting! Disadvantages: None that I can see! :)

For four years under the command of Taggart the crew has bravely fought of foes and enemies, with gross and outrageous hairstyles to say the least. Then tragedy struck...the series was cancelled!! Twenty years later this outdated crew are still doing conventions, autograph signings and opening small electronic stores, without much interest from the general public.
So as their distant fame fades away, the ... ...his little encounter with the galaxy above, Jason tries to covince Gwen, Alexander and the rest of the team that this really happened. Thinking that this is all a joke, the guys tag along, only to have egos bruised as they realise that this is true!!
However one teensy, tiny little problem has presented itself. Somehow Mathesar and his people saw every single last episode of Galaxy Quest. Now taking in for a moment that these are aliens, Mathesar ...

Advantages: Funny; great story and acting; family film Disadvantages: none
This is one of my all time favourite comedy films, not mentioning the fact that it also has a couple of my favourite actors, Tim Allen and Alan Rickman. It is a Science Fiction/ comedy family film released in 1999 and I think it's meant to be a bit of a spoof on 'Star Trek'.
The plot is like a 'film within a film'. I'll keep this review as short, simple and detailed as possible for you. The gist is:
*There are 7 actors that presented a series of ... ...adventures battling aliens and stuff, a bit like star trek. The mission in the episodes is to retrieve a special device called the 'Omega 13'. Because the series was never properly completed, no one knows what it does, but it's a powerful device.
*The series only lasted a couple of seasons; the actors retired for 17 years and returned for a couple of special shows. *Some real aliens (called 'Thermians' - a peaceful race) see the show on their tv ...

...am going to rave about. Galaxy Quest is one of the funniest films ever made and I love it to bits.
If you are a fan of Science fiction in general, and Star Trek in particular, then you will love this movie. Even if you are not but just enjoy a good comedy then this is well worth a look as it works on many levels and will appeal to a wide audience. Barring the odd swear word it is a real family film.
Galaxy Quest, as its title suggests, is a rip-off ... ...the long-cancelled cult SF-TV show, Galaxy Quest. The enraptured audience is watching the last episode of the show on a giant screen. It ends on a major cliff-hanger, with the crew in a seemingly helpless position. Then, the Commander utters the ominous phrase, "Activate the Omega-13".
The appreciative crowd erupts, eager to meet their heroes who are about to be introduced on stage. But there is a delay, and we switch back-stage, where we see the ...

Advantages: Great laughs and thrills Disadvantages: Some Trekkies will like it
...play it down, however, cos Galaxy Quest is just a brilliant, brilliant movie and one of the most enjoyable films of the last five years or so, quite simply wonderful.
It's got really good press wherever I've read about it and lives up to all the hype for once.
The film centres around a sub Star Trek type cult TV show which has inspired the same sort of Trekkie anoraks you get in real life, but in this case you go behind the scenes and see the petty ... ...bitch and moan about everything, but especially Tim Allen as the space ship's commander, Taggart, whom the fans love nearly as much as he does himself.
The original series ran for four years before being pulled and just like William Shatner, the cast are still making a living out of leaping into their space duds 25 years later, well beam me up Scotty.
The film opens at a fans' convention with a photo signing session, but then some real life aliens ...

...idea with hilarious results is Galaxy Quest.
Galaxy Quest was produced by Mark Johnson on behalf of DreamWorks Pictures. Directed by Dean Parisot who was also responsible for the quirky television comedy show Northern Exposure. I was one of the few that actually like this television series which was seen mainly through the eyes of a doctor tricked into living in Alaska to look after the people there. The show has been axed for 18 years and the actors are doing so badly that they are forced to don costumes and attend these conventions to make $15 a signature. They are a motley lot bickering about having to attend and mad that Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen - TV's Home Improvements) seems to get all the glory whilst they stand in the background.
Well they are finally all introduced by Guy (Sam Rockwell). ...

Advantages: Comedy at it's finest. In a naive way in which the whole family will appreciate. Disadvantages: The sometimes too obvious humour.
of the show before they actually end up in space.
Galaxyquest is just over 100 minutes long, and gained PG ratings in both the UK and the USA. The director Dean Parisot, allows the characters to share both soppy moments with other characters as well as making us laugh in a way that is contagious! One recurring hillarity that tickled my humour was Sigourney Weavers' role of talking to the computer and repeating the reply the computer makes every time. In fact she has said in an interview that when she put on the blonde wig to play Gwen in the film, she felt her 'IQ drop precipitously'! Another hillarious scene is when the sci-fi geeks (including Justin Long) on planet earth lead them around the spaceship from home!
This is a comedy which can be viewed repeatedly and still have the same affect on you as the first time. It also highlights the fact ...
Advantages: Stunning animation, excellent series, wonderful stuff! Disadvantages: It's the last season! Two naff episodes.
episodes (two here and two in Season three) that I found to be below-par.
The humour is cutting edge stuff, especially the ?Where no Fan Has Gone Before? episode which takes the mickey out of devotees of ?Star Trek? to a far greater extent than the film ?GalaxyQuest? ever did! It even includes the voices of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy amongst others..!
The animation is excellent and DVD really shows how good it is, particularly the use of computer generated graphics for various spaceships and scenes ? far more imaginative than Lucas? computer-saturated galaxy from Episodes One and Two (and probably Three!) ever were.
It?s not just about the main characters either ? all the old gang pop up now and then, Morbo the News Monster and his co-anchor, the Nibblonians, Zapp and Kif work well alongside newcomers like Leela?s parents ...

GALAXY QUEST is a satirical comedy that pokes fun at the influence science fiction shows such as STAR TREK have had on their audience. The cast members of the cult sci-fi television series GALAXY QUEST now earn their livings appearing at conventions and grand openings, led by their bomastic captain Jason Nesmith, played by Tim Allen. When an alien race--the Thermians--arrives on earth, it appears that they have mistakenly appropriated the show's culture as their own, thinking the series was actual fact. Desperate for help in battling the evil General Sarris, they bring the actors with them into space to save their planet. A surprisingly smart and funny send-up of the science-fiction culture and the influence television has on the world at large, GALAXY QUEST is a comedy that even non-genre fans can enjoy, with terrific turns by Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tony Shalhoub.
