desire to be slim, yoga's popularity with celebrities like Geri and Madonna have made people aware that it can be used for weight loss. But don't expect aerobic style...
stark division between those who do yoga and those who choose the gym or other sports need not be rigid, and that practising one does not preclude the other.Yoga Conditioning for Sportis not only a satisfying yoga session in itself, it will certainly improve any other fitness pursuit. The tanned and athletic-looking Rodney Yee is one of the leading yoga authorities in the world. He has designed an opening warm-up which works on the spine, hip-joints and shoulders, a conditioning body work-out which improves all-round flexibility and strength, and a final "mindful" cool-down.Yee's instructions are minimal yet precise. While hyper-active gym fanatics might find the pace slow initially, Yee's hypnotic voice, along with his regular focus on the body and sport--opening up tight spots, finding the centre, focusing concentration-- provide the necessary motivation. Sufficient close-up shots of the other two sporty-looking teachers enable following the session at different levels. In addition to a simple all round sequence, Patricia Walden's additional workout consists of a wonderful introduction about her own discovery of yoga, training with BKS Iyengar himself and the impact yoga can make on oneself. For those new to yoga, start with this before following the main programme. --Lorna V
desire to be slim, yoga's popularity with celebrities like Geri and Madonna have made people aware that it can be used for weight loss. But don't expect aerobic style yoga withYoga Conditioning for Weight Lossfrom lifestyle specialists Gaiam.Anyone new to yoga is best off starting with the extra yoga session which provides an excellent introduction to yoga from Patricia Walden. Her advice, that it is better to practise for short periods every day (instead of one hour a week), is particularly pertinent to weight loss. Regular practice changes the mind--which in turn changes the body.Suzanne Deason's specially designed session incorporates a 10-minute warm-up to loosen the muscles, a core segment which works out the muscles and creates awareness of the body and a toning, relaxing cool down. Though designed with four progressive levels of fitness, featuring four teachers practising simultaneously, following one's appropriate level can be confusing. Though stunning, the Sedona setting combined with the soft American voice, the meditative music and the slow pace is very New Age. It's a sound session, but for those fired up to lose weight it's not engaging or motivating enough. --Lorna V

This was the first yoga DVD that I ever bought. I had just finished college and after christmas time I noticed that I had a little pouch where there wasn't one before. Both of my parents are overweight and I said "no way, jose." So I purchased this DVD and when I first started it I thought, "this seems really basic." But when I actually focused and did all the moves and held the poses as long as the instructor, I could feel a slight burn and I would break a sweat. I continued to do this almost everyday for a month and the pouch I was beginning to grow was gone. And I love listening to Suzanne Deason. She has such a gentle voice and she is not intimidating even though she is an accomplished yogi (yoga teacher). She'll give you a very brief spiel on the benefits yoga has for the body, mind, and soul.
Now I am somewhat of an experienced yogini (student of yoga), I still enjoy doing this DVD every now and then to go back to the basics. It would not be a good idea for someone who is an intermediate or advnaced yogini to do this regularly, but for a beginner that will give you the building blocks for a lifelong journey that is yoga.
