As I am in an Elvis mood and have decided to write about all things Elvis I have chosen G.I blues (as it was one of a few movies listed). G.I Blues narrowly escaped my top 5 Elvis movies and Torr, this one is for you !
G.I Blues was made in 1960 and was Elvis's 5th movie and grossed $4.3 million. Filming for the movie started as Elvis was discharged from the army and as Elvis had been based in Germany, that was were the film was set.
The album sound track to the movie was released in October 1960.
Side one.
Tonight is so right for love What's She really like Frankfort Special Wooden Heart G.I Blues
Side two
Pocketful of rainbows Shoppin around Big Boots Didja' Ever Blue suede shoes Doin' the best I can
All vocal accompaniment was provided by the Jordanaires, Elvis's early backing singers. The movie was produced by Hal B. Wallis at Paramount Pictures. Elvis's leading lady Lilli was played by Juliet Prowse.
Elvis stars as Tulsa Mclean a G.I in the armed forces. He and his army buddies Cooky and Rick form a band called the Three Blazes the main aim of the band isn't to make music, it's to meet girls ! They are the hardest working army band and plan to open a club together when they are discharged from the army. They can hardly believe their luck when they are asked to perform in the Armed forces Show.
The Three Blazes are a hit especially with the ladies due to the talented. good looking lead singer, Tulsa McLean. Tulsa is asked to take over on a bet made by a G.I who is to be transferred to Alaska. The G.I has bet that he can spend the night with Lilli, a cabaret dancer who will not give the time of day to any G.I . Tulsa is confident he will win the girl as well as the prize money.
He meets Lilli and eventually persuades her to go out on a date with him, after several knock backs.Inevitably they begin to fall for each other , Tulsa forgets all about the real reason he is pursuing Lilli and Lilli is totally unaware that G.I's are following her and Tulsa around keeping an eye on their investment.
Another of Tulsa's army buddies decides to sneak off and marry his fiancée and Tulsa finds himself in the unlikely role of babysitter, of course he is a complete disaster and has to telephone Lilli for help. She agrees and he heads over to her apartment with the baby held in a basket. His G.I buddies tail him to Lilli's place to see if he will win the bet. They sit outside in the street all night as Tulsa stays the night.
As rehearsals for the Armed Forces Show start the next day, Lilli who is also performing in the show overhears Tulsa's army buddies boasting about Tulsa winning the bet to spend the night with Lilli. She is devastated as she believed that Tulsa tricked her she is about to have Tulsa shipped off the base by his Commanding Officer when the newly-weds arrive looking for their baby. They thank Lilli for helping Tulsa care for their child and Lilli realises the whole thing was a misunderstanding.
But will Lilli reach Tulsa in time to tell him that she believes him before he too is transferred to the base in Alaska ? Will there be a happy ending or will Tulsa be travelling on the Frankfort Special train out of there ?
This is a heartwarming movie, I realise now Torr that yes you were right, it should have been included in my Top 5 Elvis Movies. if you are expecting oscar winning performances then forget it take it for what it is, a light hearted musical movie with Elvis as a handsome young singer (type cast or what !) and you will enjoy it too !
I am aware now that I have mistakenly placed this op in the album section, ciao have been in touch can't move it yet as the film title is not there !! So we are stuck in limbo !! LOL If you feel like rating it somewhat helpful or off topic yet.before it's moved..... I'll find ya and send the boys round !!! (only kidding !)

Somehow I missed this what a lovely pic of him. and a great review. Elvis is soooo underrated by some. Methinks you have to be young at heart to really appreciate him. And another thing we went to see Colin Paul and the Persuaders down at Kirk Hallam and he was practising some slow Elvis numbers, BECAUSE he has been chosen to appear with Elvis's original girl backing singers down at Hemsby. He has the voice nearest to Elvis I have ever heard. Next time he is on near you I will let you know. Enjoy the black leather---think I'll join you. Hugs Maggie xx
