I love futurama. I am in love with Fry. This may indicate my slight bias when writing this review. But comedy is subjective, and I cant tell you if youll like the programme- I can tell you that you should like it. And also attempt to review the presentation, and special features and the such like.
Chances are if you are contemplating buying all four series you are already a fan but here is a breif over view-
It was made by Matt Groening of Simpsons fame and has a similar feel about it in terms of the animation style and the comedy, including many classic one liners:
'Eek it's so hot; the butter in my pocket is melting'
Philip J Fry is accidentally cryogenically frozen in 1999 (seconds before new year), and wakes up 1000 years later where he meets Bender the substance abusing bending robot, Leela the one-eyed alien, the Proffesser Fry's only living relative, Hermes the Jamacan bureaucrat, Amy the spoilt rich girl from Mars, and Dr Zoidberg the crustacean like creature who thinks hes a good doctor. They all end up working for the Professer's delivery company.
It only takes a few episodes to get the series going with mindless silliness (Fry accidentally 'drinks' an emperor and then becomes his successor), or social commentary (the year 3000 is threatened by an asteroid made of garbage from our time).
Some of the best episodes-
Hell is other Robots- Bender finds drugs, then religion, then annoys everyone, then goes to hell where we meet the awesome robot devil and spontaneous singing (I personally believe everything should have more spontaneous singing in it)
Xmas Story- Santa is deranged homocidal maniac robot
Time Keeps on Slipping- In order to beat the Harlem Globetrotters the Porfesser engeineers mutant basketball player aged with temperal somethings- but this causes time to move forward, Fry and Leela end up getting married without realising why
Where no fan has gone before- Futurama meets Star Trek, with the original cast (GEORGE TAKEI!!)
All of series 4- the best series but dont get confused, when they aired it they split into two. Its the most emotional series, fry and leela get closer, also the funniest and the last episode has the robot devil and yet more singing
The set comes in a smart box with all 15 dvds in individual boxes but divided by series. Its well presented and put together. On the back of each dvd it tells you which episodes are on it and a brief synopsis. Their are cast and crew commentaries and interviews (Ive only listened to series 4 but they are very funny), storyboards, deleted scenes (not enough though, and shame you cant watch the full episode with the scenes put back in, stills, character profiles, how to draw the characters, also flashes of alien language that appear in the episodes also appear in the menu which apparently can be translated online.
In summary the box set is as well put together as the series themselves, despite that many commentaries and extras were made after the show was cancelled they retain their humour.
