language remake every bit as shocking as his brilliantly conceived original 1997 Funny Games. In this exploration of our violent society Haneke retells the story through the eyes of a middle-class family who arrive at their secluded holiday home in the Hamptons for a two-week vacation. Soon after, a young man makes a surprise call, and asks to borrow some eggs. When the man is joined by his 'charming' friend (Michael Pitt), what initially appears to be an innocuous visit by their neighbour's guests, soon turns into a horrifying ordeal for all concerned as the two men embark upon a twisted campaign of torment and raw terror.

FunnyGames U.S.
Back in 1997, Michael Haneke's disturbing picture stirred up endless debates about violent behaviour in movies and society. That film was called FunnyGames, a German language movie that challenged viewers and filmmakers gratification for gratuitous violence. Now just over ten years later he has revisited and remade this for a wider audience with the original title FunnyGames U.S.
Focusing on a middle class family on vacation at their lake house, we also meet Peter and Paul, two young men who are introduced to the family as friends of their neighbours. However, after a short while and trying to charm themselves into the family's house the young men then impose themselves on the family and subject them to all sorts of sadistic, psychological and horrifying games.
The performances in this film are nothing short ...

Advantages: groundbreaking in it's time a must see in modern european cinema Disadvantages: the German language isn't the most enjoyable language on earth
In 2007 Michael Haneke released a movie "FunnyGames u.s." to make one thing clear from the beginning this is not the same movie! It s way better...
One of the biggest obstacles for an English audience could be the german language although subtitles are available. Maybe that's the reason why Michael Haneke decided to make his "us" version? Who knows, anyway, the german language for me aint an obstacle (living in Belgium near the German border) so I could fully enjoy this quite unique fimexperience.
The two main charactersPeter and Paul are two at first sight very decent and civilized young man who come over to ask for some eggs. OUt of this simple ordinary fact Michael Haneke succeeds in making a movie that's one of his kind. The two young friends start to terrorize the bourgeois family and what makes this movie so interesting for me was ...
Anna, Georg and their son Georgie travel to a lakeside house for their Summer holiday. Everything seems perfect until the arrival of two young men who begin a game of cat and mouse..

"...[A] beautifully acted and paced German variant of CAPE FEAR..." (New York Times, p.E5, 11/03/1998)
DVD Description
A powerfully graphic film (even though no violence is ever shown on the screen itself) about an Austrian family who goes on a country vacation and become the victims of two cold-blooded psychopaths who are out to torture them with their "funny games." Haneke's point, that fictional violence is as real as the real world's, is presented chillingly in this extremely well-acted, yet potentially offensive effort. Weak of stomach, beware.
