In this riveting look at military life during the Vietnam conflict, Stanley Kubrick, who made the powerful antiwar classics PATHS OF GLORY (WWI) and DR. STRANGELOVE (the cold war),...
more...once again explores the behavior of men in battle. FULL METAL JACKET, adapted from Gustav Hasford's novel THE SHORT TIMERS, is broken down into two very different parts. The first half of the film focuses on the training of a squad of Marine grunts on Parris Island, and more specifically on the troubled relationship between the brutal drill sergeant (a frightening Lee Ermey) and an oafish misfit (a brilliant Vincent D'Onofrio) who just happens to be a sharpshooter. The first half ends with a devastating, unforgettable scene, leading into the second half, which takes the grunts to Hue City, the climactic battle of the 1968 Tet Offensive and the turning point of the Vietnam War. The story is told through the eyes of Private Joker (Matthew Modine), a cynical aspiring photojournalist who is soon forced to fight for his life and the lives of his fellow recruits. The sniper scene, which takes place amid bombed-out buildings (rather than in the familiar jungles), serves as a microcosm for the Vietnam War--as well as war in general. FULL METAL JACKET is an unrelenting, intelligent, and challenging examination of war told by a master filmmaker.

This has to be another film that's in my top 10. A truly brilliant film with all round quality throughout.

Plot

This film follows the life of a young army recruit that is nicknamed Joker as he goes though training and then gets moved to Vietnam for a tour of duty. During training, he is forced to work with the most incompetent private in the platoon, nicknamed Private pyles, who is soon detested by everyone. [WARNING SPOILER!!!] Pyles soon becomes insane and ends up killing the drill sergeant before turning the rifle upon himself. [SPOILER END!!!] The second half of the film follows Joker as he goes into the field to take photos and ends up in a fiery battle in vietnam. I think the plot starts to go downhill after the drill sergeant is killed as he is by far the best character in this film.

Characters

As i've already said, the drill sergeant was the best character in this film by adding comeical value to the film with his strange and wonderful insults. The acting thoughout this film is brilliant with the actors remaining to be sincere throughout the drill sergeant shouting at them. Vincent D'Onofrio who plays private pyles really showed exceptional acting and the audience can easily see his turn from sanity.

Special Effects

Ill just try and keep this section pretty brief, the special effects are actually pretty good for the year it was made in.

A brilliant film that must be watched by everyone at one point in their lives. Its certainly memorable.
