Out of all the war films about Vietnam, Platoon and Hamburger Hill being some of the most popular, Full Metal Jacket stands out there as the forerunner.
Based on the novel "The Short-Timers" by Gustav Hasford, the film is essentially split into two stories linked by a number of characters. The film follows a new recruit, Joker, with his fellow soldiers through basic training and right into the conflict in Vietnam. The first half of this film is the chilling tale of military brutality mainly at the hands of the drill Sgt Hartman (who was played by ex-marine Lee Ermey). This part of the film mainly centres around Private Pyle, a new-recruit pushed to the edge of his limits. The second half of the film centres around the new-recruits after they have been transported into the combat zone. This part or the film mostly deals with one individual skirmish. The film finds itself caught in the trap of many of the war movies of the time, how to create audience compassion with a character who is essentially in the wrong. With amazing war scenes, especially as they were filmed in London's Docklands before it's redevelopment, Kubrick only gives a brief snap-shot into the Vietnam conflict leaving any opinion on the war up to you.
A nice new re-mastered disk awaits you when you open the box. The film has been given the full restoration treatment and now boasts crystal clear sound with visually crisp picture. With only interactive menus and a trailer this DVD does not boast a lot of features, but all is forgiven because of the re-mastered picture and soundtrack.
Having been hailed as the best Vietnam war movie ever made, if you disagree, then it is definitely up there with the best.

I've never seen all of the film but I well remember playing cricket in Silvertown back in the 80s and seeing the odd-looking writing on top of one of the warehouses that was used in the battle scenes and not knowing why it was there!
Well written and H only because it could do with a bit more detail

Advantages: an excellent all round film. superb for those who like war films but equally watchable for anyone else. Disadvantages: perhaps a little too much violence and bad language for some
Advantages: Thought provoking, great one liners, great acting, good story Disadvantages: Too short for both parts. Maybe there should have been 2 separate films?
