of Fleming's most amazing fantasies creates the nightmare world of SMERSH - the Russian counter-spy organisation its sickeningly foul section head Rosa Klebb and her top assassin Grant. When the action shifts to Istanbul and Klebb's plot to destroy the unsuspecting Bond one of the most brilliant chase sequences in fiction (unrivalled even by Buchan or Greene) unfolds. One of the defining books of the Cold War (and one of President Kennedy's favourite books) "From Russia with Love" is perhaps even more enjoyable to read now than when it first became a huge international bestseller.

place in British fiction. The creator of an entire genre and the inventor of the most widely recognised figure in British literature since Sherlock Holmes Fleming has a presence and flair now denied to most other writers of the 1950s. These three novels show Fleming at his peak - it would be hard to argue whether "Rosa Klebb" "Dr No" or "Goldfinger" have greater grandeur or repulsiveness - with three plots ofderanged implausibility and many of the dazzling set-pieces that made the early films so memorable.

Advantages: Lots of action and thrills Disadvantages: None
Terence Young's FROMRUSSIA WITH LOVE was released in 1963, one year after its predecessor, the first James Bond offering DR. NO, took the world by storm. The latter was a very exciting introduction to the world of secret espionage as vividly created in the Ian Fleming novel it was based on; but how well does the follow up Ian Fleming adaptation, with greater production values, John Barry's now famous musical score and the movie franchise's first hip title sequence, do in comparison?
007 is a licence for English Secret Service Agents to kill. It is a great honour and few agents have it. James Bond is one of them. One of England's finest he is sent to Istanbul to retrieve a much sought-after decoding machine, which can access Russian state secrets, from a defecting Russian agent, who, working in Istanbul, is risking her life bringing ...
Advantages: Great storyline , good range of extras Disadvantages: Extras not quite up to the standard set by the other Bond discs, mono sound - again!
You know it's Bond when that music starts, and here we have the second Bond film from 1963, 'FromRussia With Love'. It may be the second film, but it's the first to feature those wonderful silhouetted females cavorting over the theme tune, leaving us all gasping for the outline of nipples and gasping at the amazing gymnastics! (Well, that's what it used to do for me anyway!)
It's also the third film to be released in the wonderful remastered DVD series, packed full of ultra-special extras. Just what a DVD should be like!
While I'm concentrating on reviewing the DVD and not the film here, suffice to say that Connery's second outing is a far more relaxed affair - Connery looks and sounds much more the part, and while it lacks the grittiness that Dr No had, it makes up for it in the hints of exotic locations and multiple women that ...
Advantages: Sean Connery, styllish and atmospheric Disadvantages: Lacks the spectacle of later Bonds
shadowly impressions of Blowfeld. Ali kerim Bay also deserves a mention as one of the best allies in the series. We do genuinely care for his character and his fate.
FromRussia With Love is easily one of the best films in the series. The Ultimateedition looks great and with Eon's vault of Bond material plundered for the extensive extras, no Bond fan should fail to have a copy on their DVD shelf. ...
Secret agent James Bond battles the all-enveloping tentacles of an international crime syndicate called SPECTRE. The organisation's mad plan for world supremacy unfolds with the icy efficiency of a chess master's complex strategy and if they succeed the antagonism of the cold war will be pushed from deep-freeze to the supernova of atomic oblivion. But our man Bond dispatches sultry spies, madmen, and double agents with the same coolness he displays while downing martinis and making love to beautiful blondes. In this--the second of the series--Bond travels to Turkey to meet a mysterious Russian woman who claims to have fallen in love with his photograph. She offers him a secret translating device if he will join her, although he does not know that she has been put up to the task by Rosa Klebb--formerly of the KGB--who has gone to work for SPECTRE. It's Bond's assignment to get the girl and the machine back to England, and to do it--of course--in style. Digitally restored.
