of Fleming's most amazing fantasies creates the nightmare world of SMERSH - the Russian counter-spy organisation its sickeningly foul section head Rosa Klebb and her top assassin Grant. When the action shifts to Istanbul and Klebb's plot to destroy the unsuspecting Bond one of the most brilliant chase sequences in fiction (unrivalled even by Buchan or Greene) unfolds. One of the defining books of the Cold War (and one of President Kennedy's favourite books) "From Russia with Love" is perhaps even more enjoyable to read now than when it first became a huge international bestseller.

Many people refer to this as one of the best Bond films to date, and as one of the best spy films ever made. Filming began back in 1963 on April 1st, and was first shown in the UK on Sept 23rd 1963. Of course From Russia With Love is the second of the long line of Bond movies and grossed a massive $78.9 million (around $410 million today).
Following on from Dr No, From Russia With Love brought a number of new things to the Bond films, as well as setting the standard for Goldfinger (review coming later).
THE STORY:
After Dr No, the evil crime cartel SPECTRE seeks revenge for the death of its operative Dr No. Bond is set up by the organisation to be disgraced in a plot that has him helping a Russian beauty steal a top secret decoder machine. Bond is helped out by the introduction of gadgets (one of the defining features of a Bond film). Who can forget the first appearance of Desmond Llewelyn as Q as well.
There is also the introduction of Blofeld the most intimidating and powerful of all Bond villains. He is served by his operative Rosa Klebb, and Red Grant, who is seemingly unable to show pain. Grant and Bond’s fight to the death on the Orient Express is one of the Bond series high points.
Overall the From Russia With Love has everything expected in a Bond film: exciting action, cool gadgets, amazing locations, beautiful woman and a spectacular sound track.
Since this opinion is more about the offerings of the DVD rather than the movie itself I won’t go into anymore detail here.
THE DVD
The Special Edition DVD is packed with extra features. They have retained the letterboxed transfer previously performed for the now discontinued THX-approved movie only version. The picture itself has been enhanced over the VHS equivalent. There are some occasional dust and speckles that hint at the film’s age but other than that it is impressive.
The DVD retains however the film’s original mono soundtrack. While it sounds fine, I was very disappointed like with the other earlier Bond movies that they hadn’t bothered to remaster the sound like they did do with Thunderball. Why did they do this – it’s so frustrating. Most people with a DVD player have it hooked up to some form of surround sound system; surely they were aware of this.
With the disc there is the usual collectors booklet, which is provided with each film in the collection. This details the cast, the background to the film, and many other details many Bond fans may not been previously aware of. You can discover John F Kennedy’s connection with the film for example, or find out that while filming one scene the director’s helicopter crashed although Young was pulled to safety with only minor cuts and bruises. Filming resumed just and hour later.
THE EXTRAS:
As the norm with the collection, there are plenty of extras to keep Bond fans happy. Firstly there’s a audio commentary by Terence Young, as well as contributions from other key members of the cast and crew. Unless you’re a big Bond fan you may find this a bit boring, otherwise you will treat it as a useful audio diary of the film’s production.
Then there’s a 34-minute feature on the making of From Russia With Love (Inside From Russia With Love), which is fascinating. Especially to see Sean Connery hanging around, not looking quite a Bondish as usual.
Following this is a 30-minute documentary about Harry Saltzman, one of the principle people behind the success of the Bond films. He of course partnered Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli for the first 9 Bond movies.
There’s an extensive photo gallery of production stills, which also includes snapshots of a lost deleted scene.
Finally there are the original theatrical trailers, TV and radio spots and an animated storyboard sequence for the boat chase.
Overall the DVD is another fantastic addition to any Bond fans collection. The high quality of the film itself is supported by a well-made selection of documentaries and other extras. There may not be as much in the extras department as some of the other films in the Bond collection, but this is still a very worthy purchase.
Advantages: Great storyline , good range of extras Disadvantages: Extras not quite up to the standard set by the other Bond discs, mono sound - again!
...have the second Bond film from 1963, 'From Russia With Love'. It may be the second film, but it's the first to feature those wonderful silhouetted females cavorting over the theme tune, leaving us all gasping for the outline of nipples and gasping at the amazing gymnastics! (Well, that's what it used to do for me anyway!)
It's also the third film to be released in the wonderful remastered DVD series, packed full of ultra-special extras. Just what ... ...again for the film footage from the actual making, see Connery hanging around looking very un-Bond like. However, that's it for the extras (apart from a useless Stills Gallery - buy a book if you want to look at photos), and while it's great to find DVDs with this many extras, it's relatively sparse compared to some of the other discs (Thunderball for instance).
The picture quality is up to the standard of the other discs I'm pleased to say, with ...

~ ~ Following on from the outstanding success of the first James Bond movie, Dr. No, in 1963, the studios and money men were very quick to get a second helping onto our cinema screens the following year. (May, 1964)

He is once more pitted ... ...we have come to expect from more recent Bond movies, with James simply getting an exploding briefcase with a tear gas canister hidden inside, a high powered assassins rifle with an infra-red scope, and a hidden knife and roll of gold coins. No fancy cars for our lad on this occasion, but he does get himself a trip on the fabled Orient Express train, where he despatches a bad lad, SPECTRE's chief hunk Red Grant, (Robert Shaw) through the carriage ...

The film marks the debut of the white pussycat and its master, SPECTRE commander Blofeld. But not for them their usual aim of global domination; this time it's personal: to avenge the death of Dr No by killing Bond nastily; to distribute image-damaging porno pics of him in bed with a Russian Mata Hari - and all after duping him into giving them a decoding machine. The bait is Romanova , a simple KGB clerk who's as innocent as she's lovely. Best remembered ...

...edition of the Bond series. From Russia with love was one of the classics too. The film boasts a number of outstading elements. One of these is the pre-credits seqeunce were Grants attcks a fake Bond. Another being the introduction of Q and the Bond gadgets.
Bonds assignment in this film is to un-cover a decoding machine called 'Lektor'. This is currently held by the Russians. Bond is helped by Soviet agent- Romanova. SPECTRE, a secret national ... ...not easy. A classic moment from any Bond film.
Q made his first appearnce in a Bond film here. It was fairly short in comparison to other films. He was portrayed as maybe an un-interesting bureacrat. This aside, he came up with some pretty cool gadjet. One of the more famous inventions is the Attache case. In the train battle- it saves Bonds life. It contained many smaller gadgets- which would, as always, proove to be usefull in the long run.

...violence and gadgets. The second From Russia With Love was infinitely better and for a Bond film surprisingly gritty. From Russia With Love featured an altogether more gripping and exciting screenplay than many of the somewhat formulaic sequels. As it was made in 1963 it was still made against the background of the Cold War and indeed the Cuban Missile Crisis had been only a couple of years before. The enemy were seen as the Communists in Russia ... ...with a helicopter.
Whilst From Russia With Love was a very good film this only serves to show the paucity of later Bond films. The quality of the writing fell as the budgets for stunts as gadgets rose. The later Bond girls were plastic and merely included to appeal to the male audience. Like many of the Bond films it is ultimately a fantasy and a bit of nonsense and should not be taken too seriously. The films are made with the producers tongue ...

shadowly impressions of Blowfeld. Ali kerim Bay also deserves a mention as one of the best allies in the series. We do genuinely care for his character and his fate.

Advantages: Solid Bond film Disadvantages: Not as good as Dr No
, and Daniela Bianchi is sexy as Bond Girl number 2, Tatiana Romanova.
My Opinion
Many consider this the best Bond film of all of them. I was not too sure about it. The performances are very good, and we are introduced to some scary villains in Red and Rosa, and the organisation S.P.E.C.T.R.E. raises its ugly and sinister head, but I rated Dr No higher than FromRussia With Love. The direction and plot are okay, but I think Young did a better job in Dr No.
The scenery is once again breathtaking, and the special effects, while limited and dated, are impressive. Perhaps it was the tale itself that I was not as enamoured with, but I was not hugely impressed by this Bond film.
Conclusion
A good film, but not great.
The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £5.98.

Sean Connery - undoubtedly the greatest ever James Bond, whether it is sexy attitude towards the opposite sex or the amount of villains he has knocked out with one punch, he is the Best. DVD Description
Secret agent James Bond battles the all-enveloping tentacles of an international crime syndicate called SPECTRE. The organization's mad plan for world supremacy unfolds with the icy efficiency of a chessmaster's complex strategy, and if they succeed, the antagonism of the cold war will be pushed from deep-freeze to the supernova of atomic oblivion. But our man Bond dispatches sultry spies, madmen, and double agents with the same coolness he displays while downing martinis and making love to beautiful blondes. In this, the second of the series, Bond travels to Turkey to meet a mysterious Russian woman who claims to have fallen in love with his photograph. She offers him a secret translating device if he will join her, although he does not know that she has been put up to the task by Rosa Klebb, formerly of the KGB, who has gone to work for SPECTRE. It's Bond's assignment to get the girl and the machine back to England--and to do it, of course, in style.
