Oh bugger. Yet another Hollywood attempt to imitate britain. Watching this film after Gosford Park adds a humours twist to it, but hey, overall it comes alongside to such classics as Stoker's Dracula, Frankenstein, etc. of the ninenties, but fails to catch up. Why?
To start with, anyone with half a decent knowledge of cockney accents will fail not to snigger with Depp's throw at it. Miserable.
Then, You got the TERRIBLE lighting throught the movie. Ok, the 19th century london was grimier than a charcoal pit, but I am sure there was more ligh than that!!! How on earth will this movie go on DVD? Switch on a few lights and you see nothing... I am prette sure that in the theatre half the dimlights had been switched off... Ok, after 30 minutes of the movie you get used to it...
Also, the director spend half the movie thinking he should shoot it like "documentary style", you know, moving camera shows the movie from a "peeping tom" point of view, and then half the movie doing slow glorious cinematic shots - one simply does not go with the other. Classic filming for what should become a classic movie maybe would 've been better mate. Even Traffic wont become a classic, and the camera jolting is still annoying.
And then sound. Oh Lord... The soundtrack is either SO loud, or the speakers in the cinema were buggered ONLY for that movie (I saw Godford park in the same theatre, and it sounded fine). Crack fizzle and pop. This is not kids breakfast cereal, it's supposed to be a MOVIE!!!
And finally direction. Taking into account the camera work, the lighting an overall fakyness in the majority of the movie (very strong in the computer animated scenes, that are pretty obvious), I have to say that the director might need to follow a few seminars in his line of business again...
So what about the story? Well, it is one of the possible versions, the Mad Mason Doctor theme being rather amusing, and the harlot that marries a prince and lives in happiness very funny, but I somehow doubt it. In as much as the psychic inspector that has visions and "chases the Dragon" (opium) is not locked up somewhere safe, or that the police chief inspector orders evidence to be washed away... Oh please....
In short, dont go and watch it at the cinema, rent it out when it hits blockbusters.
