We all like a bit of speculation, don’t we ladeez and gennlemen? The story behind Jack The Ripper has been argued about and studied more than the ending of A.I. Well, only just. Aleister Crowley suggested that Jack was a black magician, and he was also believed to have been either a gentleman cricketer, a homicidal midwife, Sherlock Holmes, and even the glove puppet Sooty (explanations? Read “The Complete History Of Jack The Ripper” by Philip Sugden. Robinson Publishing, 1994). One theory was delved into by the comic book creator Alan Moore, with powerful black & white art by Eddie Campbell. Their graphic novel – From Hell – is now (cue gravel voiced voiceover guy) A MAJOR HOLLYWOOD MOTION PICTURE STARRING JOHNNY DEPP AND HEATHER GRAHAM. Oh – you want to know what theory? Read on.

***YER BASIC PLOT***
1888. London. Through the filth ridden streets of Whitechapel we roam, witnessing men urinating freely in the street, and “bang-tails” plying their trade to men of all social standings. Meet Mary Kelly (the history books know her as Ann-Marie Kelly, why was it changed? I guess we’ll never know.), played by Heather Graham. One of 5 prostitutes, all the bestest of cock-er-nee chums, and all being threatened with violence, lest they pay a pound, sorry, “paaahnd” per week for the protection of some rather dodgy geezers. One of them has a bright idea to ask her fancy fella for the cash, who just happens to be Prince Edward. She just happens to have had a baby by the blue-blooded old bean. Someone is trying to cover up this child… and they have a very permanent means of ensuring the secret never breaks into the open…
* * * * *

Now, I’ve not read the graphic novel (yet), so comparisons between the two would be like me trying to compare visiting Southend with touring Las Vegas. I’ve only been to one of them, and it sure as heck didn’t involve a long flight. From what I’ve heard, this compresses some of the book (it would have to, Moore does like his exposition), and gives a more “Hollywood” slant to the proceedings. I presume this means the ending is altered, but again – Southend/Vegas.

This is a fairly standard thriller, I’d already had the twist ruined for me (by accident), but really – it won’t take a genius to work out what’s in store. Still, like Titanic, you may well know WHAT happened, but it’s HOW it went down (ha ha) that’s the reason you watch. So, we have revenge killings of the “bang-tails”, so far so serial killer movie of the week. What sets this apart is the rather unusual characters.

Meet Detective Abberline. Played by Johnny Depp with a passable cock-er-nee accent, we first meet him in an opium den, a place he decides to sojourn to in order to induce his “intuition” – grisly psychic visions of bloodied female organs, cackling faces and spurting viscera. Aided by Sergeant Godley (Robbie Coltrane, with a thankful lack of cock-er-nee accent), he’s assigned to the Ripper case when two of Annie’s friends are murdered in swift succession.

The movie really takes its time over the facts, but spends a fair amount of time on scenes that don’t really add value – witness the Elephant Man being unveiled, but why? Look, someone close to the Ripper is having a crisis of conscience. Does he try and make a run for it? No, but plenty of shots of him looking worried. This feels like a London version of Se7en in s-l-o-w motion. Still, my feelings were probably affected by the marketing campaign, which makes the movie out to be a thrill-a-minute horror tale. There was probably one jump, and a cheap one at that (someone jumping out of the shadows). As long as you go in thinking “slow burning conspiracy thriller”, you won’t stray far from the path. If you go in thinking “triple x smelly penis action”, you’re wanting “Pong Bell”, which is in the “special” cinema down the road.

Acting wise, Johnny Depp obviously paid attention when he guested on the Fast Show. His accent slips at times, but his acting doesn’t This is a far superior effort than his skittish persona in Sleepy Hollow, and has a much better action sequence involving a horse-drawn carriage. More than adequate support comes from the aforementioned Mr Coltrane, and Ian Holm, Paul Rhys and Jason Flemyng all make fine additions to the mainly British cast.

Then… we have Heather Graham. I fully understand the need for American movies to have a couple of bankable stars. In interview, the Hughes brothers say they picked Graham for her talent. Balls. Hollywood makes demands of all directors, Graham’s name probably helped bankroll the picture. This is A Good Thing, because this is a peculiar but interesting thriller. A Bad Thing is Graham’s sub-par accent. It’s so far off the par - I don’t think she even made it to the putting green. Pringle jumpers are but a dot on the horizon, which is in turn a dot. Plus, she’s not exactly haggard, surely unusual for an 1888 prostitute. In comedic roles, Graham is a scream. In this, she really can’t cut the mustard. She’s got a rolling pin and is trying to BLUDGEON the mustard. The mustard is ruined.

Where the movie does shine, is with the direction, and the layers ready to be peeled away like a delicious parfait (sorry, Shrek residue). A few tricks are employed to make this a classy affair, with some great use of shadow, and a welcome lack of glamour when it comes to the murders. Most of them are carried out in darkness, behind the Ripper’s cloak, or off screen, with the exception of one incredibly gory throat-slashing, which will definitely raise chunks in the back of the throat for delicate movie-goers. As for those layers, there’s many a subtext – the exploitation of the poor, voyeurism, religious fervour, Masonic ritual and high-level conspiracy. Meaty subjects at the best of times, it’s just unfortunate that they become more evident on reflection. Or maybe that’s a good thing… decisions decisions!

There’s good use of still camera work, boosting the ‘graphic novel’ feel and some odd special effects that give light to the Ripper’s madness in the denouement. The recreation of Victorian London actually took place on the streets of Prague, but there’s the occasional use of SFX to recreate the London skyline. It being night during the murders, the background effects are very believable, with nary a second glimpse to check for computer glitches.

On the downside, the movie’s length (only about 2 hours) does tend to grate towards the end, probably due to some rather sedentary pacing and lack of editing. The twists are all too predictable, as evidenced by the chap behind me, who’d been explaining the plot to his girlfriend all the way through anyway. Furthermore, plot strands come and go as they please, with no real explanation given for points which become key later – the placement of coins next to the murdered women is glossed over, as is the fate of the Prince’s baby. Easily solved by reading the source material. Maybe, but I’m lazy, dammit! I want to know NOW! Furthermore, the way the movie tries to wrong-foot you as to the Ripper’s identity is plain laughable. A man scowling does not a murderer make. Someone has wobbly hands… well they wouldn’t happen to be faking it would they? OR WOULD THEY? Look, that man was nasty to someone, maybe he did it. Oh stop it... they may as well have put a big sign next to the suspects saying “LOOK I MIGHT BE THE MURDERER BUT MAYBE NOT! WOOOH!”

Last of all, the “visions” that Abberline claims are so central to his detection skills are not really given the space they need to rise his character above the usual “policeman assigned to a case who has a hunch but doesn’t get on with the chief so solves the case on his own even though he gets in trouble” shtick that we’ve seen SO MANY TIMES before (Beverly Hills Cop, Rush Hour, Lethal Weapon, yada yada yada). Visually, they border on Lynchian, but story-wise, they border on lunch-time work from a media studies student, and not a very good one at that. Probably thinking about what to have for tea. Egg and chips would be nice. Mmm… Where was I?

Nit-picking aside (aw, but it’s so easy!), this does carry a fair amount of weight, especially amongst some of the glossier thrillers around. Plus, the end did leave a tiny seed of doubt in my mind… A Good Thing. That said, this ain’t exactly The Usual Suspects.

Ultimately, I found this to be a little flawed. Sure, the direction was slick (I expected nothing less), the acting reasonable and the plot fairly intriguing, but having guessed who the Ripper was after half an hour, I soon started pining for the bar.

This isn’t exactly a film that needs the cinema, living as it does in the corners and alleyways. There are no stunning views or big visuals that require a big screen. Still, if it’s a dull Sunday afternoon and you’ve got a fiver in your pocket, it may well be worth a jaunt. Best viewed on your own, or with someone who won’t make sarcastic comments at key moments, like *my* friend did - Argh!

Thanx for reading!

Very well written op! magnificent. And I'm sure you lot don't look like the Elephant man.

So many mixed views of this movie around, not least here on Ciao, that I've yet to decide whether to commit the sweaty fiver. It's still clutched in my nervous grip despite attempts by several young people, some passers-by and a small police constable to pry it loose. the jury's still out despite your excellent review. Cheers ~ Steve

Won't be seeing the film as I don't like slashers - even those with once-a-movie slashings. Chunks! A few typos though - "take sits time", a missing full stop a few words later, and "a bug sign" on the subject of suspects... Really must see "The Last Suspects" again sometime soon. Cheers - TT. p.s. sad as it sounds, it took me a little while to understand the US-significance of the tag line "You Think You Know Horror - But You Don't Know Jack"...
