It was Harry's first morning at nursery this monday, and for the first time since he was born (well, almost!) I found myself in town on my own for 2 hours. And I was lost. I felt very lonely and missing Harry terribly, so I decided I would pop along to the library for a browse and a read to help the time go quicker. As I was leaving, I noticed this film on the DVD shelves, and thought it looked okay and was worth a watch. How wrong was I?!
Friends with Money (pretentious title or what?) tells us the tale of 4 women, all friends but all very different and at different points in their lives at the moment. Franny has inherited her money but her husband seems to think it's as much his as it is hers, Christine is a script writer for television shows but her marriage is in real trouble, Jane is a fashion designer with a questionable husband and who is falling apart in front of her friends, and finally Olivia, the pot-smoking poor one of the group who's working as a maid. Her 3 friends are determined to find her love but Olivia isn't having much luck. Will the women remain friends through the ups and downs?
I thought from the plot this might be a funny take on friendship and how the women cope with the vast sums of money they have and a bit of a funny story to do with Olivia as well but this just didn't happen. In facts, I don't actually recall even cracking a smile throughout this dire movie, it was so depressing and downbeat that it was making me feel pretty depressed as well. There were clearly moments that were supposed to be funny involving Olivia and her then-boyfriend but they just made me cringe and wince when I was watching it. I really can't tell you how terrible this film was!
The cast did promise something on its own, with Jennifer Aniston playing the downbeat Olivia. The problem with Aniston for me is that she will never be able to breakaway from the "Rachel" persona that she is best known for and therefore I struggle to see her in a serious role like this one. She seemed to only act with half the effort she put into other movie roles, and this really came across in her performance and it wasn't that enjoyable to watch. The other actresses were somewhat better however. Joan Cusack puts in a good if boring performance as inheritee Franny but I wanted to give her a slap everytime she wanted permission from her husband to spend her own money!
Frances McDromand played Jane, the one with the awful marriage and she was annoying in her own little way as well. She was so indecisive it was irritating the heck out of me, but she was good on screen and enjoyable to watch in her performance. And finally nutty Christine was played by Catherine Keener, and this was probably the best performance of the lot to be honest. She pulled off her depressing role with a real honesty and passion, and I actually felt sorry for her, unlike I did any of the others! The husbands of the characters did pop upt hroughout but no performances were really worth mentioning as they were so few and far between.
All the way through the film, I kept convincing myself that something funny was going to happen or that they would all end up with some sort of happy ending but no matter how hard I wished for it, I was left feeling miserable and annoyed with having watched this as it ended. A lot of the scenes were incredibly depressing, and a few actually were quite uncomfortable to watch, especially those involving Olivia and Mike...what a pig! I didn't like watching those and thought that she needed to grow a backbone and it was things like this that just made me want to switch it off, but for some stupid reason I didn't.
If for some bizarre reason you still have a hankering to watch this film after my review of it, please try to hire it for free on some free trial for DVD rentals, just please don't waste money on this. Jennifer Aniston has it in her to released much better quality films than this, and this is certainly one none of these actresses should be boasting about. I can honestly say I didn't enjoy one minute of it, thought all of the characters were pretty dire and that this is possibly the most depressing film I have ever seen. Simply dreadful...avoid like the plague!

Friends with Money seems to be being presented to the world as a chick flick - our DVD box is pink... This is probably cos it's got Jennifer Aniston in it. It did win a Women's film prize for the Director but I feel it has more to offer than to be written off as another girlie film. There are some truly amusing parts to the film and how well it is crafted was not obvious to me on the first viewing - being a boy I am perhaps a ... ...and Simon McBurney being my favourites however I think different people will have different characters that they relate to/like better than others, there is a good range from which to choose. Joan Cusack and Catherine Keeler do well as do Jason Isaacs and Greg Germann - all faces you will know from elsewhere. The more minor characters are well cast, particularly the Marty.
I see this as an ensemble piece with a good actors and performances, well ...

Friends with Money is a 2006 romantic film released in the United Kingdom on May 26th 2006. The film was written and directed by Nicole Holofcener and stars Jennifer Anniston. Although there are only seven main characters in this film, I found that I couldn't connect with any of them. It had nothing to do with the fact that they were upper-class , just that as a viewer I don't think we had a chance to really get to know the characters as well as we could of , and this resulted in me not really caring about ...

Advantages: Thought Provoking and Amusing in parts Disadvantages: Boring and Drawn Out in some scenes
Friends with Money is about the relationship between four women who have been friends for years and as they enter their 30's and 40's their friendship is challenged by their individual degree of financial comfort. I found Friends with Money easy to watch if a little tedious in parts, however on the whole I would say it is worth watching if only for an insite into the insecurities and problems faced by what I would imagine to be every human being.
This film will make you laugh and cry and will also make you consider the issues it brings up.

Advantages: Good acting, good narrative Disadvantages: Bad ending
My friends and I recently went to see this film and i must say we thoroughly enjoyed it. However there is one popular annoyance between us, the ending.
Of course i am not going to tell you guys the ending and spoil it for you but i will just say the following - if you expect to see a serious action/drama film, don't waste your money going to the cinema, if you still want to see it in the future watch it on television or if a friend or relative have the DVD go round a watch it.
Clearly this is all in my opinion, i believe the film is well directed and produced and has a great narrative, but to me the ending goes against the films generic genre and in a way makes the film appear less serious. ...

However he ends up making plenty of new friends in Radiator Springs and learns a lot of valuable lessons along the way, before returning to the world of racing.
The DVD is good value for money - can be picked up easily for £10 or less. There are also bonus bits with Mater and funny Pixar 'shorts' The weird "One Man Band" short animation is excellent, but none of the other extras worth mentioning really.
I enjoyed watching this film with my boy, even if they are cars there are great voices and like-able characters. They are all fantastically done, not just the famous Lightning McQueen. Favorites include Mater the goofy tow-truck, and the wise old car Doc Hudson who is not what he first seems. There are plenty of catchy lines in ...

DVD Description
FRIENDS WITH MONEY focuses on four female friends examining their relationships with their significant others and themselves--and not always liking what they see. Frances McDormand stars as Jane, a successful dress designer who has taken to wild public outbursts, stops washing her hair, and is married to a kind man who might be gay (Simon McBurney). Joan Cusack is Franny, a multimillionaire who appears to have the perfect life with her husband (Greg Germann) and kids. Catherine Keener plays Christine, who is building her dream house and writing a screenplay with her husband (Jason Isaacs) as their life together is crumbling. And the youngest of the foursome, Olivia (Jennifer Aniston), is a pot-smoking ne'er-do-well who works as a maid, stalks her ex-lover, and has a thing about not paying for certain high-end cosmetics. As they prepare to attend a major fundraiser for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), they all take stock of their lives, reaching some very difficult conclusions. Nicole Holofcener's first two films, 1996's WALKING & TALKING and 2001's LOVELY & AMAZING, were intelligent looks at modern-day relationships between friends and family. Continuing her one-movie-every-five-years schedule, 2006's FRIENDS WITH MONEY follows that tradition of smart screenwriting, excellent acting, and careful direction. Holofcener has again created the kind of fascinating, complex characters, insightful and believable dialogue, and wholly realistic situations, crafting an adult look at life and love in the 21st century.
