Well... what can i really say about Friends? It's without doubt my favourite TV show & I still enjoy watching it now even though it finished almost 5 years ago.
For those of you living on a another planet who haven't experienced the joy of this show i'll fill you in with the basic plot. It's based around 6 20 somethings living in Manhattan. The show takes you through the ups & downs in their life such as relationships & careers until eventually they're 6 30 somethings. It's filled with humour & it tackles serious issues such as pregnancy, infidelity & homosexuality in a funny, non offensive manner.
I immediately fell in love with all the characters & i think what's great about the show is that most people can relate to at least one of the characters.
There's Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston). Rachel starts off in the show as a spoilt girl who has just walked out on her wedding day leaving her fiancé Barry at the alter. Rachel comes looking for her old school friend Monica who she hasn't spoken to for many years, hoping that she will help her. Rachel was handed everything on a silver platter & has never worked a day in her life, but with the help of her oldest friend Monica who gives her a place to stay she discovers that she isn't the helpless girl she though she was as she finds herself a job, stands up to her parents, falls
in love & eventually has a baby.
Monica Gellar (Courtney Cox Arquette) is really the mother hen of the group & loves being in control of every situation. She is a struggling chef who dreams of one day being head of a restaurant. Monica is obsessively neat & cleans at every opportunity even sometimes in her sleep & panics if ever anyone makes a mess in her spotless apartment. The one thing Monica longs for in life is a baby & this has caused problems with relationships in the past, that is of course until she meets Chandler.
Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) is the dizzy one of the group & has had a very troubled past. Her mother killed herself when she was just a child leaving her & her twin sister Ursula to live on the street. Her step dad is in prison & her real father left when she was just a baby. Phoebe has always wanted to meet her real father as the only family she has is her Grandmother & her selfish twin sister who she doesn't get along with. She has often gone in search of her real dad which most of the time has ended in disappointment until the she meets a man at her Grandmothers funeral who she believes to be her biological father. Phoebe is a qualified masseuse & is also the musical one of the group she plays the guitar & performs songs she writes at Central Perk on a regular basis, her trademark song is Smelly Cat but in her own opinion she has written lots of great songs & has a great voice. Phoebe's journey starts off with her not knowing who her real family is but as the series progress she meets more of family including her half brother Frank jr. She has always wanted a family of her own & eventually gets that in the form of her husband Mike (Paul Rudd).
Joey tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) is the ladies man of the group. He's half Italian & comes from a big family of 7 sisters. He is an out of work actor with his most memorable role playing doctor Drake Ramoray. He doesn't do relationships & on many occasions he gets into trouble for sleeping with a woman & never calling her again. He does however fall for a select few women including Rachel. Joey goes through the series looking for jobs & having bad audition after bad audition until he finds a steady show on a soap opera.
Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) is the funny one of the group & often uses his humour as a defense mechanism to avoid embarrasing situations although still often ends up in them. He is unlucky in love & often gets back with his on/off girlfriend Janice. No one seems to know what Chandler's job is & this is highlighted in many episodes which leads Chandler to believe that no one listens to him. Chandler's mum is an erotic author & chandler's dad is a gay transvestite who runs a show in Las Vegas aptly named Viva Las Gaygas! After all of Chandler's failed romances he eventually falls in love with Monica & although it doesn't always run smoothly you know that they'll never split up.
Ross Gellar (David Schwimmer) is Monica's older brother & is known as the geek of the group. He is always telling the groups useless facts that no one wants to know. Ross is a paelientologist & is passionate about Dinosaurs sometimes to the annoyance of his friends. Ross is very commetitive with his younger sister Monica as Monica feels that Ross got all the attention growing up for being the smart one. He married Carol at a young age & eventually ends up divorcing her when he discovers she's a lesbian & has been having an affair with a woman called Susan, Ross then discovers that Carol is pregnant with his son Ben, at first he freaks out but after coming around to the idea he becomes a great dad to Ben & accepts Suan's part in his life. Ross has had a crush on Rachel ever since high school & their on/off relationship has often been the shows main story line. The question is will they end up together or not?
Friends still manages to entertain me & you can never tire of the humour in the show even after all the years & all the countless re-runs of episodes. So for those of you who haven't watched the show i highly recommend you buy it as you wont be disappointed.
