After a long break from writing (but enjoy reading though), I decided to write more on some of the brilliant DVD that I just received. Here's one (that I just swapped successfully at www.swaphut.com -- read my op about this site here!) By the way, this dvd is in region 2. Apparently region 1 has more extras if I'm not mistaken. But, I'm sure the difference is not that big! Enjoy!
The film: ~~~~~~~~~ There's probably better review here under the film category, so I try to make this one as short as possible. Frequency is probably one of the less publicised movies last year, but the energy behind this movie is so great that it's very unfortunate that it didn't make it big.
The concept/plot behind Frequency is apparently time travelling, changing past events and thus, the future, aren't new stuff in movie plots (witness: Back To The Future series and others) and Frequency does not make any new inroads into the genre.
Also, in order to properly enjoy this type of film, viewers really have to temporarily suspend their beliefs and logical faculties. (I mean, comments like "Hey! That's not
possible, right!" Look, nobody can really sort out all the paradoxes of time travel, not even scientists!” shouldn't even cross your mind). Come on people, this is a movie and anything's possible, right? Even in the real world!
Frequency stars Dennis Quaid(last seen in Any Given Sunday—a great dvd as well!) and Jim Caviezel(the Thin Red Line) It's directed by Gregory Hoblit (Primal Fear) and the screenplay is written by Toby Emmerich. So, basically, we have a New York cop, John Sullivan (James Caviezel), who, through extraordinary solar activity phenomena is able to speak to his dead father, Frank Sullivan (Dennis Quaid), via a ham radio. He manages to give his father info that allows him to avoid his death and change history.
However, everytime you change the past, something else changes that you aren't prepared for and it doesn't necessarily have to be good. In this case, a psycho killer has been let on the loose and thus, father and son, despite being separated by a 30-year distance, must work together to undo the damage.
Dennis Quaid, is a great actor and as usual, he plays the part of Frank Sullivan, who suddenly realizes that he's talking to his grown-up son 30 years in the future, to perfection. He portrays the strong, loving, self-sacrificing father superbly. I really pity James Caviezel as he really doesn't have the screen presence of Quaid and can barely hold a candle to him.
You seldom find brilliant 'father-and-son' movie (the best I can recall is Liar Liar!), and Frequency definitely fill this gap! The intense and close father and son relationship is so well shown in this movie, that it can really touch you in a lot of ways.(it did me good!)
The plot is really great, building up with suspense and tension almost every part of the way and it doesn't let go right up until the end. And everytime something bad happens to the good guys, you find yourself full of suspicions that things are only going to get worse for them and can only pray that your suspicions are wrong. (Yes! It's that exciting) Also, the special effects are also stunning, with watching warehouses burning from the inside, explosions galore to the bad guy's hand rotting away to nothing (courtesy of a change in the past).
Frequency is actually, surprisingly quite a good movie. It has competent acting and superb thrilling sequences, great direction, nice special effects and an exciting plot (provided you can forget about the non-logical parts of it.) Despite the bad reviews given to it and the unexciting box-office tally, Frequency is one movie you won't forget for a long time.
The dvd: ~~~~~~~~ And surprisingly as well, the dvd does deliver superbly. With superb transfer rate, you can clearly see all the special effects (the 'Aurora Boralis') playing into the screen.
Not just that, the dvd also packs some brilliant special features. This includes 40 'good' minutes of extras:
~Theatrical Trailer—the normal stuff ~Deleted Scenes-this is great, you can see what's missing from the movie ~Cast & Crew Biographies-a comprehensive CV of our casts/crew ~Conceptual and Solar Gallery Documentary-this one is very educational and will explain the scientific explanation behind the idea of the movie.
Conclusion: ~~~~~~~~~~~ Frequency is just terrific. It's a pity that it didn't do that well in the cinema, but hopefully that will change with the DVD.

As I mentioned this op in my review of the Alien DVD I thought it only fair to reciprocate your comment. I wanted to see this film when it came out based on the director, Gregory Hoblit's, previous films, "Primal Fear" and "Fallen", both of which I liked, but was put off by negative critical comments. However, I trust you more and I will watch it soon. Thanks for your kind comments on my ops - much appreciated. Believe it or not, the "host" pun WAS unintentional! It was only after I'd typed it that I realised what I'd done! The subconscious is an amazing thing.
