Do you like comedy? Do you like Romance? Do you like the French? If you answered yes to any of those questions then French Kiss is the film for you!
Set in 20th Century Europe, the plot crosses the channel from England to France as the characters get dragged into a situation they never deemed possible. I don't want to give too much away, because that would just spoil it, so I'll just tell you how it starts:
There's a nice happy family - a Mum, Dad, daughters and a son. This son is engaged to Kate (Meg Ryan). In the build-up to their wedding, Kate's fiancée has to go on a business trip to Paris. Soon he has fallen in love with a beautiful French woman, and refuses to return. Kate, determined to get him back, follows him to the French capital - but she gets more than she bargained for when she meets a rather strange French man called Luc (Kevin Kline). Ok - that's all I'm gonna tell you about the plot, because any more and I think you'd all be furious that I spoilt it for you.
The film was made in 1995, but I'm sure it will never age - I know some films can be released one year and the next they'll be out of date, but this one's not like that. It combines hilarity with a beautiful but unexpected romance - but that's all I'm willing to say about content - I really don't want to spoil it!
As for did I enjoy it? Yes - as you have probably already guessed, I thought it was wonderful! Lasting about 1 and 3/4 hours, every minute was entrancing. Although it's a romance, the whole tone of the film is light-hearted: Kevin Kline excels himself as he delights us with his French accent. A wonderful lead, he creates magic onscreen with co-star Meg Ryan to give an amazing film. They seem to interact perfectly, making them perfect actors - unlike some other romances, it is so believable that they are meant to be together because their acting seems to fuse together.
Prices? The DVD cost me £19.99, for nearly 2 hours of sensational acting - it's well worth it! Videos cost about £12.99, but I'm not too keen on them, because the picture always seems to be fuzzy and has those annoying white lines across.
So where can I buy this wonderful film? Well, where can'y you buy it? I've seen it at Safeways, it was at Blockbusters on special offer not long ago, and I've also seen it in HMV. You'll be able to find it in most good supermarkets, and if not I'd go down to HMV. It's bound to be there!
Rating: The film is rated 15, because it has a couple of sex scenes - though nothing too explicit is shown [sob]. Swearing is also in there, though not frequent - and anyway, Meg Ryan says it and she's so sweet I could forgive her anything! They’re really not so bad anyway, so if it's those putting you off the film I wouldn’t let them bother you at all!
Setting: Well, this is a bit tricky because the setting moves about so much. At first we're in the heart of England - the suburbs of London (though they seem to look so much better on-screen!). Meg, of should I say Kate, gets on a plane and scootles off to France. Though the plane journey makes a bit of a scene, I'm not going to be tricked into giving the plot away, so you'll just have to watch it to find out what I mean! In France, she goes on a search for her darling sweetheart...[Not telling too much about the plot]...she finds herself inside a top Paris hotel...she gets onto a beautiful beach...she's in a train...she gets to an old farmhouse...she gets on a plane... (and that's all I'm going to say - if you want to know what happend where I've put the dots, you'll have to watch the film - which I promise you'll enjoy!)
Now, I don’t want to spoil the film for you by revealing anything else, so if you are desperate to know more then leave a message in my guestbook, and I will tell you whatever you want to know. Otherwise, I recommend this film to all those of you who long to see a good film, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Matt
